Hokusai Museum's new exhibition of ukiyo-e prints and other works by ‘The Great Wave’ artist Katsushika Hokusai focuses on food and delicacies of the Edo period. It's said that Japan's food culture developed during these years of peace and economic development, which resulted in people starting to actually enjoy dining. The appreciation for different flavours was born and that led to the creation of the country's large repertoire of seasonal dishes.
Hokusai was one of the prominent Edo gourmets, especially with his love for sweets. Throughout his career, he created many lively depictions of Edo food and its connoisseurs. With this exhibition, 'Hokusai and the Gourmets of Great Edo', you'll also discover authentic food replicas of that time, along with a collection of recipes. If you're curious about these flavours of the past, head over to one of the restaurants and cafés in the museum vicinity and sample Edo-themed menus recreated in collaboration with the exhibition.
