Michelin’s inspectors have the dream job. All year long, they stop by new and existing restaurants incognito to assess whether they’re worthy of a place on the coveted Michelin Guide. New eateries are added to the guide every single month for their mastery of flavour, quality of produce and consistency. Once in the guide, restaurants can be considered for one of those illustrious stars (handed out just once a year). In August, 13 places across the UK made the cut.

In its announcement of the new additions, the Michelin Guide highlighted The Nest, which sits in the Feathers Hotel on the edge of the Cotswolds (a stone’s throw from Blenheim Palace). The Nest launched following a major refurb of the hotel and Michelin praises it for its ‘enormously satisfying food thanks to chefs who know their ingredients and show great restraint’.

Manchester had two of its restaurants added to the guide. Pip at the recently opened Treehouse Hotel made the cut for its cooking that ‘shows pride in northwestern produce and packs bags of flavour into every dish, whilst maintaining a fine sense of balance’. Its dinner menu includes dishes like crab and lobster thermidor pie or smoked mackerel with mustard cream and rhubarb ketchup.

Time Out favourite Winsome earned its place for its ‘admirably gutsy, straightforward’ menu with ‘hints of nostalgia’. In our own list of the city’s finest restaurants (on which it ranks fifth), local Manchester writer Kelly Bishop gave a special mention to Winsome’s ‘huge sharing rabbit pies, meticulously grilled, sliced and fanned out chops, and whole fish presented artfully on nostalgic sauces like parsley liquor’.

Further north, two restaurants along the Fife coast joined the Michelin club – seafood restaurant Ondine in St Andrews and bistro-style inn, The Shoregate in Crail. Four establishments down in London also made it into the Michelin Guide for the first time – you can read more about each of those restaurants here.
