If you’re big into adventure, a trip to Sri Lanka is guaranteed to be on your bucket list. Whether you’re a keen surfer, a history buff or looking for a new mountain to climb, the south Asian country ticks all the boxes

So you probably spotted back in July 2025 when we reported that the country would soon make it cheaper for Brits to visit. In a bid to boost tourism, the Sri Lankan government announced it would waive the $50 fee (roughly £37.50) to enter for 40 countries around the world, and the UK made the cut.

Now, we’re here to tell you that the fees have officially been scrapped. As of May 25, Brits can stay in Sri Lanka for 30 days without paying a thing.

We should say that while you no longer have to shell out for an Electronic Travel Authorization, you do still need to apply for one online before you arrive. Should you wish to stay longer than the allotted 30 days, you may apply for a visa extension by paying the applicable visa fee.

Unfortunately for anyone who paid ahead of the change on May 25, you won’t be eligible for a refund on the fee. Brits, as well as travellers from 39 other countries, join those from the Maldives, Seychelles and Singapore who already had their ETA fees waived.

Sri Lanka, known as the Pearl of the Indian Ocean’, is known for its gorgeous white sand beaches. Plus, it’s home to eight different UNESCO World Heritage sites, including ancient cities, rock fortresses and cave temples.
