Thought travel chaos at the UK’s airports was last summer’s problem? Think again. Following months of strikes and industrial action across Europe, budget airline easyJet has announced one of the biggest single doses of travel disruption of the summer so far.

A whopping 1,700 easyJet flights have been cancelled over the coming months, impacting over 180,000 passengers. From the flights and airports affected to your rights as a traveller, here is everything you need to know about the cancellations.

When are easyJet cancelling flights?

The cancellations have already been announced and they affect flights throughout July, August and September.

Flights to and from London Gatwick are impacted by the cancellations.

Why are easyJet cancelling flights?  

EasyJet blames reduced airspace over Europe and ongoing air traffic controller strikes for the cancelled flights. It says that the move is pre-emptive in order to reduce last-minute cancellations.

How do I know if my easyJet flight is cancelled?

If your flight is cancelled, easyJet should notify you well in advance. That is, after all, the purpose of them cancelling now rather than closer to your departure date.

Can I get a refund if my flight is cancelled?

You most certainly can. According to easyJet’s advice on delays and cancellations, if your flight is cancelled you can get the next available flight for free, get a voucher for the full value of your booking or request a full refund.

Several passengers are complaining that easyJet is rebooking them on flights on different days to their original travel plans, but you don’t have to settle for this. Your rights as a passenger state that you are allowed to rebook your flights for the same day with a different carrier, and that easyJet has to fully reimburse you if you do so. So, before you settle for travelling on a different day, be sure to shop around for other flights first.
