Finally, summer! A five-day heatwave is set to blast the UK next week

Better late than never, eh?

For those of you still holding out for a bit of sunshine this summer in the UK, well, your wishes may soon be granted. The country is set to be hit by an ‘Iberian plume’ later this weekend, which may bring overall temps up to 26C. That’s right, 26C! According to the Met Office, September 2 to 6 may bring a ‘heatwave’ of five straight days of drier and balmier weather.

Areas such as London, East Anglia and the Midlands will experience a turn of humidity with warmer temperatures and increasing amounts of sunshine. In London, temps may reach a peak of 24C on Monday (Sep 4) while other areas in the Midlands (including Birmingham) will hit 21C. 24C may not be a full-blown heatwave, but compared to what we’ve had so far this summer, it might be the best we can hope for.

Some reports have suggested that the warmer weather may last ten days, but this hasn’t been officially announced by the Met Office just yet.

A Met Office spokesperson said: ‘There are signs of high pressure starting to build in from the west of the UK through next week, however there is still uncertainty in the forecast due to Tropical Cyclone activity in the Atlantic which can influence the weather we experience in the UK.’

‘There is no sign of any spell that would meet heatwave criteria in our outlook, and while settled conditions could lead to higher temperatures during the day these will be offset by cooler overnight periods.’

It’s worth noting, however, that before the ‘heatwave’ the weather will remain pretty miserable. Heavy showers and humid temperatures are set to hit large parts of the country today (August 31) and tomorrow (September 1), except in Scotland where skies will remain pretty clear.
