Just think about how good a restaurant has to be for it to be one of the best in the entire world. This planet has countless eateries of every kind, from bougie bistros and swanky Michelin-starred estabs to understated market stalls. To be the best of all that, you’ve got to be pretty damn excellent.

Naming the world’s finest restos is, naturally, hotly contested stuff. But online reviews site TripAdvisor has had a go, having revealed today (September 27) its 2023 edition of the Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best restaurant awards. TripAdvisor bases its ranking on the quality and quantity of user reviews over the past 12 months.

Excitingly, a whopping five UK restaurants made the final global ranking, across two categories. That’s right, several of the world’s finest eateries are right here in the UK!

Three UK restaurants featured in the ‘fine dining’ category: The Old Stamp House in Ambleside (in the Lake District), which came third overall, Paul Ainsworth at No. 6 in Cornwall’s Padstow, which came eighth, and The Kitchin in Edinburgh, which came thirteenth.

Elsewhere in the awards, two more UK establishments featured in the list of the best ‘vegetarian’ restaurants. Mallow in London’s Borough Market came twelfth, while Herb in Leicester came thirteenth.

All of which should give you plenty more foodie inspo until next year! Check out the full Travellers’ Choice Awards here.
