The UK is not short on unusual places to stay. In a tiny rural village in Wales, you can sleep overnight in a ‘moon conker’. In Edinburgh you can check into an ancient dovecote (a structure originally built to house pigeons). On the Isle of Wight you can stay inside the actual bus used in the 1997 film Spice World. Now, in a little village in Suffolk you can stay inside former silos.

Once used to store masses and masses of grain, The Corn Silo and The Barley Silo in Belstead (not far from Ipswich) are now luxurious accommodation. Both properties have two double bedrooms each with an en-suite bathroom and can sleep up to six people. Guests also have access to a generous garden with sweeping views over the valley and a private hot tub to soak it all in from.

The two holiday home are perfectly placed for exploring Suffolk and its coastline. You’re a short drive from Woodbridge (home to one of the greatest gastropubs in the country), Flatford (a place immortalised in the paintings of Constable) and Ipswich (where you’ll find a whole host of buzzy bars and restaurants lining the marina).

Both silos have already welcomed the first guests. One review for The Barley Silo commended it for its ‘beautiful setting’ while a recent visitor to The Corn Silo called it a ‘real gem of a property’. If you wanted to spend seven nights at either property, you’re looking at a total of around £780-£792.

And for any Londoners reading this, the silos are super easy to reach from the capital. Simply take the 50-minute train from London Liverpool Street to Colchester then hop in a cab to the village.

Find the booking pages on Sykes Holiday Cottages here (for the Corn Silo) and here (for the Barley Silo).
