The Newt might not be the most appealing name for a glamourous hotel, but that hasn’t stopped on Somerset establishment from being named the best boutique hotel in the entire world. That’s according to The World’s 50 Best Hotels, anyway, which held its inaugural awards ceremony earlier this week.

The Newt in Somerset was awarded the Carlo Alberto Best Boutique Hotel Award 2023 and was also ranked as the 37th best hotel in the world. The list included hotels from 35 locations across six continents.

Located in Bruton, The Newt has made a name for itself for being a luxury getaway where guests can immerse themselves in nature. In the grounds of this bougie hotel are numerous different habitats including a kitchen garden, wild swimming ponds, apple orchards with over 265 types of apple, ancient woodlands and cow pastures. There’s also a cider cellar where guests can watch cider being pressed, a History of Gardening Museum, butchers, farm shop, ice cream parlour and bakery.

The main hotel itself is in a reconstructed classical villa with a working bathhouse that is now a luxurious spa. There are 23 guest rooms in the main seventeenth-century house, plus more rooms spread over four other buildings including a renovated stables and farmhouse.

For eating and drinking, guests aren’t short of options either, as the hotel has three restaurants all serving fresh and seasonal ingredients from the hotel's own garden and suppliers. Guests can dine in the Botanical Rooms in the main hotel, the Garden Café, and the open-plan Kitchen in The Farmyard. All of this is dreamed up by South African wife and husband duo Karen Roos and Koos Bekker.

Here are a couple more shots of the place.
