Manchester’s first-ever sky park has been super popular over the summer, for both locals and tourists alike. When it opened back in July 2022, the urban park gave the previously-derelict Castlefield Viaduct a brand-new lease on life. The park was supposed to be temporary, but if you haven’t yet had the chance to visit, we’ve got some good news. The project has officially been extended until (at least) next autumn.

And there’s more! The National Trust has announced the next phase of a larger expansion plan that will aim to green the entire 330m-long viaduct. There are plans to create a green corridor to Trafford and Salford, though proper planning still needs to be done. Landscape architecture firm BDP have apparently been chosen to lead this next phase.

Duncan Laird, head of urban places at the National Trust, said: ‘As we enter this next phase of the project, we can start to truly understand what this space could become – and how it can serve future generations. This won’t happen without big investment however, and we hope BDP can help us create a vision for this space to reflect ambitious plans for the city that investors want to be part of.’

The extension of the viaduct park project includes its guided tours, meaning that visitors have more opportunities to discover the history of the area. Find out more about visiting the Castlefield Viaduct on the official website here
