A new boutique hotel planned for the town would have 72 rooms and overlook the River Wye

Bakewell is the largest and possibly the loveliest town in the Peak District. Besides being where the famous Bakewell pudding originated, it’s full of honey-hued stone buildings, quaint shops, cosy cafes and stellar pubs. So, it makes the perfect place to base yourself when you want to explore the Peaks. With that in mind, a new hotel is on the cards for the town.
The hotel would be situated at River Works Business Park, a spot on the edge of town overlooking the River Wye. Plans for the accommodation were first submitted in 2019 but, of course, progress was stunted by the Covid-19 pandemic. The hotel would be four storeys with 72 bedrooms. There could be nine more bedrooms in the western elevation and an additional eight bedrooms in the conversion, subject to planning permission.
At the moment, the River Works is home to a range of businesses, from a brewery to joiners to an artisan bakery that sells the original Bakewell pudding. If it goes ahead, the hotel would be the final stage in the development of the site.
While the plans are all laid out, the proposed hotel still needs to find an operator. That’s what Savills has been appointed for. Tom Cunningham, UK regional director for Savills Manchester, said: ‘This is a unique opportunity to operate the potential hotel which will form part of the redevelopment at Riverside that is already emerging as one of Derbyshire’s most exciting mixed-use developments, and the hotel will be the latest addition.’
If the hotel does get built, guests will be within easy reach of attractions like Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall and Bakewell Old House Museum. That’s not to mention access to the dramatic landscape of England’s first ever national park and cute tea rooms and pubs aplenty.
