Of late, weather in the UK hasn’t exactly been great – and that’s putting things very, very likely. To make matters even worse, this weekend will see the first time this year that the Met Office has named a storm. Storm Antoni is on the way.

The Met Office names storms when they have the potential to have ‘medium’ or ‘high’ impact. The idea is that the public pay greater attention to named storms and so they’re more aware of how dangerous they can be.

So what exactly will Storm Antoni bring? The Met Office is apparently forecasting heavy rain and exceptionally strong winds. Wind speeds could reach 65 miles per hour at the coast (and 50 mph inland), while up to 60mm of rain might fall in a single day.

Storm Antoni will primarily affect areas of Northern Ireland, southwest England and south Wales, where yellow weather warnings are in place for this evening (August 4) and tomorrow morning. The Met Office says that there could be widespread flooding and traffic disruption.

It should be noted that this isn’t the UK’s first named storm of the year, it’s just the first one named by the Met Office. Storms Otto and Noa hit in February and April, though those names were chosen by overseas weather agencies.

You can check the weather forecast for how Storm Antoni will impact your area on the official Met Office website here.

Did you see why London in the rain is elite, actually?
