Over the past few years, off-grid cabins have become a major travel trend. In an increasingly phone-addicted society, the idea of ditching your device and going offline has never been more appealing. When you’re in a small lodge in the middle of nowhere, with little to no signal, you’ve got no choice but to embrace the precious screen-free time.

One of the companies behind the off-grid cabin boom is Unyoked – a brand born in Oz that came over to the UK in 2022. It already has dozens of cabins, mostly on private land, across the country. But now, Unyoked has landed a 10-year partnership with Forestry England that’ll see its huts pop up in publicly-owned woodlands across the UK, in places the public has never been able to stay before.

The collaboration aims to ‘open up the country’s forests and help the public disconnect from daily pressures and reconnect with nature’. Over the next decade, Unyoked plans to launch stays in 40 pockets of Forestry England woodlands.

The first of those cabins are opening in the Dalby Forest in North Yorkshire on June 15. There are five to choose from, each big enough for two people. Like Unyoked’s other huts, the design has been kept minimal and each one features a king-sized bed, yoga mats, a CD player and CDs, books, analogue activities, woodfired heating and a solar-powered hot shower. Plus you’ve got miles and miles of walking and cycling trails literally on your doorstep.

When she stayed at an Unyoked cabin in the South Downs National Park, Time Out Europe editor Ella Doyle said that ‘every detail has been well thought through’. She added: ‘Once you settle into the feeling of doing nothing, you find that you don’t reach for your phone anyway. Trust us, you’ll return after a weekend of woodland walks and playing cards feeling seriously chilled out.’

Cam Grant, the co-founder of Unyoked, said: ‘This partnership with Forestry England is a significant milestone in Unyoked’s mission to make nature a habitual, accessible part of everyday life. It will expand our current off-grid cabin offering in the UK, giving nature-seekers the special opportunity to stay in the nation’s beautiful forests.

‘England’s forests are rich in history and biodiversity, and we’re excited to provide unique spaces where people can disconnect, recharge, and experience the profound wellness benefits of spending time in nature firsthand.’

More locations in the Unyoked x Forestry England Project are yet to be revealed. A press release says that each spot will have a maximum of five huts, so we’re expecting at least seven more locations to be announced. Bookings for the Unyoked cabins in Dalby Forest are open now
