London’s historic Ciné Lumière has just unveiled its elegant new look after a six-week renovation.
The cinema, part of South Kensington’s French Institute, reopened this week after a refit that has turned up the comfort levels in its two screens.
The two screens at the Art Deco venue now has new seats and soundproofing, improved accessibility and modernised facilities.
The next phase will introduce cutting-edge technical overhaul. Scheduled for completion by August 2027, it will include new screens, sound systems and projectors. That’ll be followed by a refresh of the backstage areas for August 2028.
The venue will be celebrating the big unveiling with a special 30th anniversary screening of The English Patient with Kristin Scott Thomas and Ralph Fiennes in attendance on September 8.
Juliette Binoche will be swinging by to present her film In-I in Motion and intro a screening of Queen At Sea on September 19.
With its two screens (225 and 34 seats), Ciné Lumière is one of London’s top indie cinemas, especially for fans of French cinema. It packs in 400 French and foreign-language films each year across a programme that takes in new releases, previews, classics, documentaries, family and school screenings and over 15 festivals, including November’s French Film Festival London.
Its ongoing fundraising campaign is being run by the Friends of the French Institute Trust, with an ‘adopt a seat campaign’ to help finance the two next renovation stages.
