Next year is set to be a big one for Tate, with must-see exhibitions at its museums in Liverpool and St. Ives

From the Mercury Prize being held in Newcastle last year (and again this year) to the Brit Awards making the move to Manchester, some of the starriest ceremonies in the awards calendar are shifting out of London. The art world, of course, has been way ahead of the music biz, with the annual Turner Prize having been held in different UK destinations since 2007.
That’s set to continue in 2027, with the prestigious gong due to be dished out in the West Country for the first time – Tate St. Ives will be on hosting duties. It’s part of a raft of art happenings due to be held outside the capital next year, with Tate having now released details of its 2027 exhibition programme (below are just non-London Tate shows – find a guide to the capital’s 2027 Tate exhibitions here).
Perhaps most excitingly, Tate Liverpool is due to reopen next year. No specific date has been given for its return, but ‘spring 2027’ has been mooted. The gallery closed its doors in October 2023, with its revamp expected to last two years. Last February, we brought you the news that the refurbishment was to be delayed, taking twice that amount of time. By the looks of things, though, it’ll be well worth the wait.
In a statement trumpeting the institution as ‘the UK’s most popular museum of modern and contemporary art outside London’, Tate has promised a new art hall designed for showcasing large-scale artworks, as well as new spaces for kicking back, enjoying the sensational views of the Mersey and generally basking in the nourishing atmosphere of a world-class gallery.
Tate Liverpool will reopen with a career-spanning solo exhibition exploring the works of local resident Chila Kumari Singh Burman. ‘One of the UK’s most dynamic artists,’ says Tate, ‘Chila is unapologetically bold, with a practice that addresses self-representation, feminism and her Hindu Punjabi heritage. Her iconography is steeped in contemporary culture, including found motifs, slogans, song lyrics, bindis, and a palette inspired by her father’s ice-cream van.’
Tate is set to announce full listings of exhibitions, commissions and displays for the gallery’s exciting reopening. We’ll bring you the details as soon as we have them.
Over in Cornwall, Tate St. Ives is due to host Gulnur Mukazhanova’s first UK museum survey. Known for her ‘expressive use of felt in wall-based works and large-scale installations’ (as Tate puts it), the Kazakh artist will combine existing works with bespoke pieces, exploring ‘the friction between a rapidly globalising world and enduring traditions’.
The Turner Prize shortlist will be announced next spring ahead of an autumn exhibition, with the winner revealed in December.
