Easter break looming and you’ve not yet made plans for the kids? Fear not: Blackpool’s Sandcastle Waterpark just whooshed to the rescue thanks to its £500,000 makeover, which should be ready just in time for the holidays.

Located on Blackpool’s promenade, the park boasts no less than 18 slides, including the Master Blaster (the UK’s longest indoor waterslide rollercoaster at a whopping 200 metres) and the Sidewinder (which was the first indoor half-pipe waterslide in the world).

Sandcastle is already a pretty sensational day out for both children and adults who see no reason to grow up just yet – and it has real staying power, too – this wet ’n’ wild paradise entertained its first punters way back in 1986.

The new refurbishment, then, is part of its 40th anniversary celebrations. There’ll be a new audio system, improvements to the changing rooms and a paint job on the slides themselves. Kyle Woodcock, Sandcastle’s general manager, said: ‘This is a landmark year for us, and we wanted to mark our 40th birthday with improvements that our guests will really feel.’

When Time Out included Sandcastle Waterpark in our ultimate guide to the 17 best indoor and outdoor waterparks in the UK, we reckoned it’s your best bet for sampling ‘some of the UK’s most famous water slides’. As well the aforementioned daredevil slides, we shouted out its toasty temperatures (around 30C) and ‘rides and slides for younger visitors, as well as a tranquil Sea Breeze Spa for the adults’.

Access to that spa will set you back a mere £7, in exchange for which you’re promised the chance to ‘renew, re-energise and feel refreshed’. With a sauna and steam room, as well as heated loungers, foot spas and a salt inhalation room, you’ll be recharged, rested and ready to fling yourself down a terrifying 200-metre waterslide.

If chilling really is more your thing, you can splash out £60 to hire a private Tiki Cabana – replete with a hot tub, flatscreen TV and food and drink. There are three other eateries on site, too.

Of course, the kids will be way more interested in burning off energy on the slides, which is why it’s one of Blackpool’s greatest attractions. General admission starts at £24.95 for those over eight, while tickets for children between three and seven cost just £15.95. Kids under two go free.

Sandcastle is currently open at the weekends, though will open during the week from March 30 and into the summer holidays.
