After Empire Cinemas went bust in July, Irish cinema company Omniplex Cinema Group has swooped in to make sure that at least some of the old Empire sites can keep showing the latest blockbusters.
Omniplex has revealed that it will rebrand the former Empire Cinema sites in Birmingham, Ipswich, Sutton, High Wycombe and Clydebank. And these are only the start. The company says that it is investing £22.5m into acquiring and renovating 14 more abandoned sites in 2024.
Paul John Anderson, director of the group, said he was ‘thrilled to bring Omniplex Cinemas to Great Britain’.
He added: ‘Our disciplined approach to investing in our businesses and unwavering drive to operate high-quality cinema locations have proved successful over the years on the island of Ireland, and has given us the confidence to venture into new territories.’
The Birmingham cinema is due to open tomorrow and the others will follow this week. Here’s the full list of new Omniplex outlets and when they will be opening:
- Great Park, Birmingham - December 6
- Buttermarket Shopping Centre, Ipswich - December 8
- St Nicholas Shopping Centre, Sutton - December 8
- Clyde Shopping Centre, Clydebank - December 10
- Crest Road, High Wycombe - December 10
