Pumpkin spice season is in full swing, but your takeaway coffee habit could soon cost you a whole lot more.
Flat whites – the so-called millennial coffee of choice – are about to cost more than £4 a cup for the first time ever in the UK. The drink hit an average price of £3 at chain coffee shops this August, but experts are predicting it will hike up again by the end of the year.
‘A flat white coffee will cost at least £4 by the end of the year,’ said Robi Lambie, coffee roaster and founder of Cairngorm Coffee told the Huffington Post. ‘It sounds ludicrous, but it’s the position we’re likely to find ourselves in.’
Inflation has pushed up the price of milk to a record high, hitting 62p per pint in August this year. It’s a cost which will be passed on to the customer – in addition to higher costs of energy, required to run large coffee machines.
Not to go all ‘takeaway coffees are the reason you can’t buy a house’ on you, but you might want to think twice before giving into your caffeine addiction before long. Then again, if you do want to treat yourself, the best you can do is get out there and support local businesses like coffee shops: everyone is feeling the squeeze.
