Renting in the UK right now is, to put it lightly, abysmal. Prices are rising like there’s no tomorrow and people are going to extreme lengths in order to keep accommodation affordable.

Now, new research has revealed that renters in Aberdeen are being priced out of the market more than any other UK city. Admiral Landlord Insurance analysed popular room rental sites to find where people on the hunt for a room are struggling the most and where demand exceeds supply the most.

It discovered that in Aberdeen, people’s budgets aren’t high enough to afford an average rental room 91.7 percent of the time. The average room costs £618 a month, but the average budget is £463.

Of course, London doesn’t follow far behind. It sits in second place with 86.2 percent of renters unable to afford the average cost of rent, which is an eye-watering £1,107. The average budget of those residing in the capital is much less at £885.

In a bit of good news though, the research found that Aberdeen has the highest proportion of pet-friendly and student-friendly rooms to rent in the UK and is in the top three cities for the number of properties with disabled access.

A spokesperson for Admiral said: ‘On a national level, just over half of renters in England, Scotland and Wales can’t afford the average rental price for a single occupancy room.

‘Compared to data from 2021, renters are increasingly priced out with the percentage of budgets falling below average rental prices increasing to 65.7% from 52.7%.

‘Renters across Britain face an uncertain future, with the Office of National Statistics reporting an increase in private rental prices of 3.7% in England, 3.2% in Wales, and 4.2% in Scotland.’
