We’re all starting to get a bit more conscious of the impact our travel has on the planet, but thankfully opting for rail over air is becoming not just more accessible, but more worthwhile. And that’s just been highlighted by VisitScotland, which has launched a new campaign promoting a journey which showcases all eight of Scotland’s cracking cities.

Kicking off in Glasgow, the route trundles past sites like Linlithgow Palace to the historic capital of Edinburgh, then on to Dunfermline, the nation’s newest city. The route continues to Perth, and then there’s a short journey to Dundee, followed by Aberdeen, with views of the River Tay.

Passengers can then continue on from Aberdeen to Inverness, and then into Stirling, past stunning views of the highlands.

The map on VisitScotland’s website shows three-day, seven-day and ten-day routes, so you can adapt the journey to your own timeframe. With all those cities and dazzling countryside views rolled into one journey, hopefully this’ll become a popular way to explore Scotland.

‘We know that many visitors are becoming more conscious of their impact on the world around,’ said VisitScotland’s Vicki Miller, according to Daily Record. ‘Our hope through this campaign is to demonstrate how easy it is to explore Scotland’s historic cities in a sustainable way.’

In fact, data from the UK government shows an 155 percent increase in passenger rail journeys in 2022, with 64 percent of people showing interest in greener options.

While this route does sound pretty spectacular, the UK is full of some fabulous train routes. Why not have a look at the best train journeys in the UK, according to us? And if you want to go further afield, we’ve got that covered too: here are Time Out’s most scenic rail routes in the world
