Crowning the greatest city in the UK is a contentious subject. All of our 51 metropolises have something to offer culturally and historically, but that doesn’t stop Geordies, Glaswegians, Londoners and more pitting against each other to argue why their home is number one.

Naturally, we’ve got our own ideas about which towns and cities are the best to visit but our friends at Condé Nast Traveller have come up with their own list for 2023 based on reader votes.

For its annual Reader’s Choice Awards, destinations were scored out of five on their nightlife, restaurants and friendliness to then inform overall satisfaction score. And the (perhaps surprising) winner for 2023 was … Cardiff

The city is somewhat of an underdog alognside big boys like Manchester and London, but was crowned number one for its ‘exciting independent restaurants, buzzy bars and up-and-coming neighbourhoods’. From the Principality Stadium to Cardiff Bay and the National Museum to Clwb Ifor Bach, the Welsh capital is rich with innovative culture and a proud history.

These are the top ten cities in the UK, according to Condé Nast Traveller’s 2023 Reader’s Choice Awards:

  1. Cardiff
  2. London
  3. Edinburgh
  4. Manchester
  5. Cambridge
  6. Liverpool
  7. Glasgow
  8. Belfast
  9. Dundee
  10. Brighton
