The makers of the Mercedes Sosa documentary, Serà Posible el Sur, should take a peek at this portrait of Amir Mohammed, an Afghan refugee now living in poverty in Pakistan, who subsists on the income derived from the music he plays at Muslim weddings and functions. The music itself is a joy; but the film is also admirably lucid and informative, placing Amir's music in a clearly defined socio-political context, and letting Amir and his colleagues speak for themselves. No sycophantic pap here: the objectionable aspects of the culture on view (not one woman appears on screen, for example) are never glossed over, though the eponymous subject emerges with dignity indeed.
