When college coach Herb Brooks (Kurt Russell) is hired to helm the 1980 U.S. men's Olympic hockey team, he brings a unique and brash style to the ice. After assembling a team of hot-headed college all-stars, who are humiliated in an early match, Brooks unites his squad against a common foe, the heavily-favored Soviet team. As the U.S. squad tries to overcome insurmountable odds and win the gold medal, the team becomes a microcosm for American patriotism during the Cold War.

The story of the 1980 men's Olympic ice hockey team is an inspiring one. Part of me wishes that this movie was made without the air of the Disney fairy tale, but I suppose it is how the story goes. Kurt Russell is expertly cast as the hard ass, legendary coach, Herb Brooks. The movie is entertaining despite everyone knowing the ending. For my time and money, the better film that truly examines the backstory of this historic victory and the mighty Soviet team is ESPN's 30 For 30 documentary "Of Miracles and Men" which features the accounts of those on the Soviet team that are rarely focused on.
