Out of the Blue
Taking a page from Paul Greengrass’s playbook, Robert Sarkies’s docudrama about New Zealand’s Aramoana massacre—in which a disgruntled gun fanatic (Sunderland) randomly opened fire on his neighbors—re-creates the event with a chilling sense of realism. The usual dramatic affectations applied to such true-life material are largely absent; instead, Sarkies focuses on various quotidian elements that take on weight as the inevitable draws closer—which only makes the film seem more nightmarish and horrifying.
