FDR, who led the country through the Great Depression and World War II, was the only president to be elected four times. In 1997, designer Lawrence Halprin created an epic monument here. The four "galleries" combine waterfalls, giant stones engraved with memorable quotations and sculptures (including a statue of Eleanor Roosevelt, the first First Lady to be honoured in a national memorial). Disabled advocates objected that the original, somewhat dyspeptic statue of the polio-stricken president only hinted that he used a wheelchair. A second, jauntier FDR, with wheels in full view, joined the display in 2001.
