The Holly Bush

Nestled in a quiet backstreet at the crest of a hill in Hampstead, this is one of the most beautiful pubs in London – the kind of boozer in which the students at Hogwarts would celebrate their final exam results. The Grade II-listed building was originally built as a house in the 1790s, then became the catering wing for the Hampstead Assembly Rooms – which included a ballroom and card room – before realising its destiny as a pub in 1928. It was acquired by Fullers in 2010, but the multi-room gaff remains pretty much untouched. If this all sounds a little too idyllic, don’t worry: Liam Gallagher was once barred for causing a ruckus here. When you spot a bunch of broomsticks parked out front, though, you’ll know why.

As you’d expect from such a cosy pub, the Holly Bush does a banging Sunday roast, while the place is also renowned for its seafood. Drinks-wise, the wine list is extensive and guest ales are on regular rotation, but you can’t go wrong with Fullers’ crisp Frontier lager.

Hunker down

Settle in by the roaring fire, perhaps with a pooch by your side – this pub is dog-friendly, after all – and know that all is right with the world.
