Hampstead may have become part of London in 1888, but no one seems to have told the Holly Bush. As the trend for gutting old pubs claims yet more NW3 boozers, this place becomes ever more popular. It’s as picturesque as they come, tucked away on a quiet, gas-lit back street and delivering on all fronts: friendly staff, ancient interior and fine, reasonably priced food (from spruced-up sarnies to lamb shank in beer). Though the upstairs restaurant does a roaring trade, it’s really all about getting the pints in and perching by the fire or in one of the wooden booths. Our only complaint is that the backroom’s glaring refurb could have been more sympathetic.

Hello! I will probably get this completely wrong but here is a little about myself. I am 29 (just) and working in London - commuting from Brighton...

Haven't eaten here recently after a particularly rubbish experience about a year ago - but it's a great atmospheric pub and the Harveys passed my Lewis-born friend's taste test.
Went back on Sunday to have lunch with my girlfriend. The food drink and atmosphere were perfect. The staff were friendly and managers remembered us (This time it was the friendly English one and the Italian guy). Would recommend the Sunday roast to anyone.
We went there this Thursday, I agree the manager have a bit of an attitude. But the Harvey's ale was good, no complaints there.
I recommended this place before but is has gone downhill since. Very disappointed, Manager has the biggest attitude and cloudy ales. Not coming back, avoid like the plague!
Yes i do agree, i went there at the weekend and had a fab time with my husband and two children.. We all had the complete 3 courses, and even an ice cream in a cone afterwards for the kids - which is make in house by their pastry chef! I was impressed by the changes so much i had to find out about this new chef, and the new ramsay was in fact a Mark Austin, quite a young chap and very talented man. This is defiantly a place to go when you want a family sunday afternoon out, or even a meal with friends as the pub has a charming old English appeal to it.
We went last night and were very happy. Judging by the reviews below it looks like Gordon Ramsey has been in to fix it. The food was excellent and reasonably priced. I drank Harvey's which was only £2.90 a pint. The blond had a glass of wine which was ok for £3.50.
There was no table service though.
Dreadful. Very disappointing. Avoid. Went for Sunday Lunch. Surroundings in back room dreary (or trendy if dimly lit grunge is to your liking) Meal very overpriced. £13.90 for roast beef. Beef was clearly feather steak rather than a traditional roasting cut, therefore was tasty but tough as this cut of beef needs long slow braising not roasting, All the food appeared on the one plate so there was no chance to avoid the excessive amount of gravy which was very salty and unpleasant. Vegetables, yorkshire pud and horseradish were acceptable but not exciting for the price.
The service was disastrous. We received only half our drinks order , the waiter had failed to note down 2 of the meals and these were served 15 minutes after the rest. We had to ask for the pudding menu and this order was also wrong when it finally reached the table. Coffee is not served on Sunday. Of the 3 dessert wines listed, 2 were not available. The bill, when we finally managed to get hold of the very elusive waiters was presented incorrectly, in their favour, TWICE.
All through the meal we were disturbed by would be diners hanging around waiting for tables.
The pub may be atmospheric if all you require is a pint, but to be avoided if you want a meal. There are many other, better locations in Hampstead for Sunday Lunch.
When will the Landlord take notice of the reviews? People are clearly unhappy with the day to day meal service even if the pub can cope with most large groups.
5* drinking experience in the front bar but 1* for food
You can get better food, for about half the price, in Wetherspoons.
There are no two ways about it. You either need to get your pub on Gordon Ramsey's kitchen nightmares, or get a new one.
I had a really disappointing experience, having walked a long way to try the food here.
We ordered food and were told that there weren't any sauteed potatoes left so the burgers would have to be served with mash. Again, we were understanding that you might run out of things if you had been busier than expected, but I thought it a little unfair that a definitely substandard replacement (mash does not go with a burger) was offered without any apology or offer to reduce the price.
We were starting to feel a little disgruntled and when our food finally arrived we were very disappointed. My boyfriend's sister had an incredibly small serving of mash with her sausages and there was an extreme difference between the size of portion and presentation of the two burgers ordered. To top it all of when my lamb arrived it was sitting on cold mash and had what can only be described as half a spoon of carrots on it, with a big gap in the middle where it looked as though I had been given some carrots and then they were taken away. I also had no cranberry sauce with it, which was part of what made me order it.
By this point my boyfriend was rather annoyed and went to ask the bar staff if that was the full size of the portion. The food was taken away without a word of apology and resturned to me with more vegetables (but still no cranberry sauce and still with cold mash).
We were all really unimpressed with the lack of pride shown in the food that you served. If this had been a cheap meal in a cheap pub we wouldn't have minded so much but this meal cost £40 without drinks and my round of two drinks was nearly £7. People can make mistakes when they are stressed but an apology or an offer to make things better would have somewhat improved our experience.
We had Xmas Luch a couple of days ago at the Pub and it was great! Incredible portions, reasonable priced and excellent service. I wish all the pubs could learn from them. Thanks for working on days nobody would like to do it!
