József fled his Hungarian homeland after the Uprising of 1956 to entertain boat passengers on the Swiss lakes before opening this Tyrol-themed basement in 1967, and he still presides over it today.
Beneath a Dortmunder Union pub sign squeezed between the shopfronts, making the narrow descent feels like gatecrashing a Central European wedding party, with steins and shots being necked as dirndl-clad maidens squeeze between the throng.
Magyar csárda tunes and Danubian favourites have everyone up and dancing, sweating off the reasonably priced goulash and schnitzels. This is one of the few places in London to sell Unicum, Hungary's answer to Jägermeister, whose secret recipe left with the exodus of '56.
