Haggerston Overground

What was once a speakeasy saloon salon above a pub is now a hard-to-find grooming spot in a London Fields bunker. International hair stylist Kenna is often abroad tending the tresses of the beautiful people, but look to resident colourist Sophia for some of the most natural and lovely looking highlighting in London.

This Dalston salon was a trailblazer of the dip-dye trend, as seen on the famous barnets of Lady Gaga and Alexa Chung. Founded by colourist-of-the-moment Alex Brownsell, and her agent and friend Sam Teasdale, Bleach has a client list that reads more like a who's who of London party people, including Pixie Geldof, Daisy Lowe and Alice Dellal, and happily co-habits its Dalston space with Wah Nails – so you can get art on your finger tips as well as your hair.

Styling cred

Nearest tube
Shoreditch High Street Overground

We love the Foster London interior; all pastel walls with framed needleworks, '60s dolly prints and cat ceramics. This may sound rather twee, but combine the uber trendy styling credentials of brother and sister team Drew and Nadia Foster and a prime Shoreditch location and you've got one of London's hottest salons.

Best for
Service of value
Nearest tube
Old Street

You don't always get what you pay for with a haircut. Oftentimes a pseudo-sexual head massage and the dubious whiff of heritage are enough to double the price of a snip. So, at Huckle, a no-nonsense barbershop that still charges £35 an appointment, you'd expect the service to be damn good. Luckily, it is. Chris Ward, my barber, and the shop's owner, pays attention to the twist of my crown, styles a trendy sweep across my forehead (we are in the middle of Shoreditch after all) and even shaves off my neck fluff during a 45-minute appointment.

Murdock Shoreditch

Best for
Men's grooming

Nearest tube
Shoreditch High Street Overground

Murdock's artfully over-scrubbed interiors, full of flock wallpaper, vintage shop fittings and retro-packaged products, belies the small London chain's real age. Its first barbershop, in Shoreditch, opened in 2006, and still perfectly delivers the sort of centuries-old faux-heritage that is often copied but never bettered. With a full grooming package, from wet shaves, manicures and in-chair treatments to simple cuts and clever restyles, the décor may be old but consistent, high quality service is relaxed and contemporary.

‘Having previously always worked for other people, we’ve really paid attention to all the things that used to niggle at us!’ says Stewart Payne, co-founder and manager of this ‘East-Meets-West London’ salon. Business partner, Ricky Lee Jones, co-founder and Master Stylist who trained at the likes of Trevor Sorbie and the nearby Taylor & Taylor, and the addition of a few ‘little wow factors’ borrowed from more exclusive establishments is what really sets this homely-feeling salon apart from its mid-range competitors.

The Painted Lady

Best for
Retro styles

Shoreditch High Street Overground

Located on a street that boasts APC and a Conran Hotel as neighbours, the Painted Lady could be forgiven for going a bit upmarket. However, this gently lit, cute little salon is much more interested than what was going on in 1950s hairdressing than the contemporary Shoreditch scene. As well as contemporary cuts and colour, the stylists at TPL specialise in screen-siren up-dos (£40) like Marilyn waves or Hepburn rolls. They even dispense lessons for groups in retro styling, so you can recreate the magic of the salon in your own bedroom.

In any other salon, it might be disconcerting to be entertained with stories of how the hairdresser currently cutting your hair has previously left clients bald, scorched or with a mop ‘tightly permed into pubes’. But 25 years have passed since celebrity stylist Adam Reed first cut his teeth as an apprentice. In that time, Reed and business partner Paul Percival have built a boutique hair styling empire, with a Marylebone salon and a prettily-packaged eponymous product line both attracting a ritzy clientele.

Occupying renovated premises on the corner of Swanfield Street, Radio is a stylish, light and spacious environment where you can relinquish tonsorial control to a team of premier-league stylists and colourists. Cool often comes with attitude (and this is Shoreditch, after all), but Bumble & Bumble's flagship London store is hip, highly professional and friendly, offering everything from dip dyes to Brazilian blow drys. Saturdays are super-busy, but the blond wood floors, pale paintwork and high ceilings make relaxing a doddle.

Glasshouse Salon in the heart of delightful Hackney is a fantastic new Salon opened by New Zealand stylist Olivia Crighton. I used to get anxious when I'd go to get my hair done but at Glasshouse I feel totally relaxed and peaceful. Great selection of speciality teas and drinks (all organic) match the whole ethos of the salon. Healthy and organic. The hair styling is fantastic, they really understand peoples needs and have the best colouring system I have ever used. You will definitely leave feeling like you've been on holiday to a restful spa resort but really you've had a colour and cut at Glasshouse.

I just wanted to mention a fantastic hair salon just opened called SCISSOR CITY in Leman Street, London. Great professional service. Zena Ex- Toni and Guy gives great hair cuts, blow dry, colour and all hairdressing needs. Tony (her father) is a first class city barber. I highly recommend a visit.

I just cheated on my hairstylist, but it was worth it! I've been going to my hairstylist for many years, I needed something modern, chic, and eye-catching. I got all of that and more at Rock 'n' Dolls in Richmond. The price was reasonable, he was charming, gave me great advice, and he managed to fit me in at 9pm. I strongly recommend this place. Regards, Marcia

Checked out a really cute place called The Parlour London the other day (heard a lot of hype about this place!) and I just felt compelled to write something when I saw it wasn't on this list! (??) It's so cute and quirky, and from the minute you walk it it's like you're home... they even gave me a bunch of free cocktails and a really cute cake on a stick (popcake?) It was really amazing. My hair looked fantastic for days afterwards which was definitely a bonus and I can't get it out of my head! I had so much fun and I am dying to go back... I can't stop talking about it and telling all my friends! You guys have to go!!!

I want to warn people about The Chapel on St. Johns Street. They charge by time and not what you have done. They say this is better value but don't be fooled. This is a complete rip off! I used to have my hair dyed and they charged me £100 but wouldn't dry it for free which is appalling considering you can't leave a salon with wet hair. When I had it dried they charged me £60 telling me the hairdresser's hourly rate was £80. To say it took 20 mins to dry my messy bob you can see why I left and want to warn people of this disgusting unfair rip off!

I normally don't write on these jind of post however after reading this article I though that the salon I last went to deserved a mention. I recently went to Sergio Giannasso's hair salon in between Leicester Square and Covent Garden and found the experience to be amazing. I normally go to budget priced barbers where you just get a pretty standard cut. There usually isn't much thought as to style or design. Sergio's salon was different, tucked away on St Martin’s Lane I felt like they really cared about me. I was a bit apprehensive as the prices were a little more than I would normally pay but since a friend who works nearby suggested I go there and I really needed a haircut I went. They washed my hair, treated me to coffee and cake and gave me a haircut actually with style and shape that I haven't seen for a long time. I was really happy hence writing this comment.

Four Mirrors in Earlsfield is smart and professional but far more personal than most. I had a half head of highlight a cut and blow-dry and was really impressed with the results. Georgia took time to understand what I wanted but also offered a couple of suggestions which I'm really pleased with. To top it off the price was really very reasonable for the quality of the cut and colour; 2 months later it is still looking great and I'll be going back!

Neville's used to be good but not so any more I am afarid - the colourists are too busy larking about to really give good service and colour - such a shame as at £300 a pop I want something that is proper decent. I have moved onto ColourNation - Geoff (above) is quite right! Good quality and good price alright.

I went to Sejour with awful consequences. I left with an average hair-cut, a massive head-ache from hearing their staff b-tch about each other constantly and half my face basically burnt from a blow-dry from hell from a rough guy that did not speak enough English to know what "stop" means! Just do not go there.

I went to brooks and brooks and saw Valerie for my haircut. She was fantastic, finally found someone who understands that my hair needs to fit in my lifestyle not the other way round! And got my perfect haircut, and I will be going back for a Brazilian blow-dry. Saw 2 people leave after having it done and their hair looked amazing! Can't wait for Valerie to do it.

Although Foster London is not on the list here. They are amazing! I am always quite apprehensive when it comes to finding the right stylist. Especially when I am new in a city. But this place is warm, friendly and they listen to what you want. I went with a picture of the style that I wanted and Alex who cut my hair willingly listened to me. My aim was to get something new and different. I got exactly what I had asked for and I got tons of good compliments too for new haircut. I will definitely recommend Foster at Shoreditch. Moreover, their price isn't too high for London.

I went there for a £70 "discounted" highlights and cut and although it is in Chelsea, this timeout article is obsolete! A great hairdresser would not need to do business with discount websites such as Groupon- it's clearly not that good. Yes the team tries hard to be vibrant, customer-focused, full of beans but the girl who washes my hair was too vigorous and when I asked ( nicely becase I AM a nice person) if she could just not press that hard, I caught her exchanging surly looks with the other girl washing another customer's hair. In my opinion, some of the staff looked really unhappy working there, not a good feeling when you're sitting and your hair is in their hands. The colorist was a friendly chap but he could hardly speak English, bless him. Which created a big misunderstanding & ruined my highlights!! He simply FORGOT to come back upstairs to check on the highlights ( something that most colourists would do, half way thru the colouring) and I had to ask a member of staff to call him!! Unbelievable... By then the highlight had turned a shade of GINGER - something I had strongly emphasised I did not want. Unimpressed - they must have used Juniors all the way with my hair, even the cut was done by another friendly chap who was clearly a junior and who did the worse blow dry/finishing job ever. Steer clear, plenty more hairdressers in Chelsea to choose from!!

Hi Claire this time out article was written ages ago (just look at the number of comments - they go back to April 2010) so the time out article is not really up to date, since then new hairdressers have opened/closed/people have moved etc etc. I think that the comments are honest and just trying to help people find a hairdresser that they would recommend to their friends.

After searching numerous amount of reviews, we chosen ESHK, my girlfriend Louise had a highlight and cut, she loves it, she was laughing a lot with the hairdresser, well, not sure what about, I didn't ask her afterwards, she seems very friendly for sure. And mine, i had my hair cut with a guy, perhaps he is from somewhere in Europe, good skill I would say. Good atmosphere, good service(i had a beer and Louise had a green tea both for free) price wise reasonable, we paid what we'd see from the price list Bad point-- I had to wait for about 2 hours for her highlights done, is a bit too long for a guy waiting in the hair salon, they do have a good selection of magazines, lovely music and offered me one more beer. Will go back and we believe that we picked a very good choice

Can't decide which one we should go, my girl friend and I just moved to east london area, desperate a hair cut, have seen Foster , ESHK or Hair and Jerome seem the best reviews, but Foster and Hair and Jerome are not in the list, should I go for ESHK? Any suggestion anyone or timeout writer? Good at men cut(60s/70s) style, women cut(classic with big fringe) style. thank you!!

Whatever you do, stay clear from Sejour in Chelsea. This place is beyond awful. I went there for highlights and a cut and not only did I come out looking like a Zebra but the service was absolutely appalling. All in all, my worst hair experience ever, I had to correct the highlights as they were so unprofessionally done...I really really dont recommend this place which by the way isn’t even held by friendly staff at all.

I moved to London after graduating and was stuck for good mid priced hairdressers for special occasions without having to take out another loan! If you love your long hair and dread visits to the hairdresser's like a kid does the dentist, leaving your layers outgrown and style outdated, then a visit to Jones & Payne is an absolute must. I made the journey from West London to this chic and informal little gem in Shoreditch and it was well worth it. This place proves that quality and pretentiousness don't come hand in hand. The welcome was warm, the decor was a brilliant mixture of ultra modern and vintage. A friendly offer of drinks was made straight away, and before I'd had a chance to marvel at the Victorian style irons used as a doorstop, the tea and a yummy treat arrived in a cute blue and white tea set. The hair wash and massage followed and was a welcome relax from the rush of the day. And the hair? In a word: brilliant. Ricky Jones is as friendly as he is professional. Straight away recognising my hair type, wavy when long, curly when short, he took me through my cut step by step. The fact that I wanted it to stay long was never contested and he took great lengths (pardon the pun) to show me how much he was cutting. My new on trend hair style means I have more body and movement when I leave it out. It also allows me to keep my hair up with perfectly sized tendrils to frame my face. Jones & Payne is a welcoming home for hair and it is a damn shame Time Out London doesn't update their London list to include them. I've visited grand places like Daniel Hersheson's to the more run of the mill Rush. All hairdresser's should be like this, the focus is on the client and the hair with the affordability not taking away from the quality of the experience. Banker or student, give it a try, you won't be sorry.

ESHK is a good salon, however last time I went it was a total disaster , this lady was unable to handle my hair. In addition she added so much mousse at the end that I had to wash my hair immediately after getting home. Why so many hair dresser cannot manage curly hair?

I would not recommend Vidal Sassoon in Covent Garden. They recently burnt my scalp with chemicals. My GP and dermatologist stated that Vidal Sassoon applied a toxic mixture on my scalp. I stayed 5 hours in the salon because of limited staff that day, I paid £155 for a level 4 colouration, and they made me pay a luxury treatment at £18. They refused to refund me or even to conduct an investigation to clarify the incident. They are expensive, rude and extremely dishonest. I totally discourage anyone to have a haircut or colouration at a Vidal Sassoon Salon.

To Anonimus.... With all due respect, I think its very important for one to have their say and let people know of good and bad experiences at the hairdressers.... that's what this website is all about ! As for saying people will do anything for a refund, well I was offered another appointment free of charge and I wouldn't go back to ESHK even if you paid me because it was that bad. At the end of it people use this website as guidance and then make up their own minds !

anonimus

i just want to say to some people to complaint a bit less about their experinces, some clients they have trouble writen in their faces, people do anything just to get a refund, so they can have a free cut or color, and they think that hairdressers are their own therapist.

I wanted someone to style my hair but not get scissor happy as I had very long hair and didn't want it cut short.I done my research, and found out about Daniel Hersheson salon, I booked with Daniel himself and he was great. he spoke to me and i explained my situation which he was very understanding. he talked me through his plans and assured me every step of the way. I was so happy with the outcome. :oD
