For the foodies of the world, there are few things more enjoyable than heading out for dinner, to try the work of a new chef, an unusual cuisine, try a brand new opening, or head to an old fave. And the world is full of some marvellous restaurants, be them local establishments or innovative new creations – just check out our lists for the best in Europe, Asia and North America

While we know what we’re talking about when it comes to food, it can’t help to have a bit of insight from some other experts, and Food & Wine’s picks for the second annual Global Tastemakers Awards have just been announced.

These 20 brilliant restaurants include not just Michelin-starred kitchens but also family-run ventures. Plenty of exciting young chefs were recognised this year, as were locations that emphasise farm-to-table dining and focus on sustainability.

From an exciting mish-mash of Greek produce with Nordic innovation at Soil (in Athens) to the intimacy of watching the chefs craft their tortillas and tamales from scratch in La Cocina de Humo (Oaxaca) this list nothing if not varied.

But which restaurant has been named the world’s best? Taking the crown for 2024 is Mérito, a Peruvian-Venezuelan fusion restaurant based in Lima’s Barranco neighbourhood. But it’s not just the best 20 that have been named – a special ‘plus one’ pick, voted for by Food & Wine’s panel, was also included. This year, that’s Dill in Reykjavik (the first restaurant in the country to be awarded a Michelin star). Take a look at the list below.
