A heat advisory is in effect in New York from noon today until 6pm Wednesday with temperatures in the mid to upper 90s. Tomorrow will be even more of a scorcher today with the heat index approaching 100 degrees. Yikes!

On top of that, an air quality alert and hazardous weather outlook are also in affect today. (We’d give it four hours tops until Fifth Avenue looks like a scene from Mad Max.) To stay safe, officials recommend you stay indoors as much as possible today and avoid strenuous activity outside.

For more information on what to do during extreme heat in New York, visit NYC.gov’s Beat The Heat page. If you’re stuck somewhere without air conditioning and need to cool down, look up the official city Cooling Center that’s closest to you.

Looking for a cool activity to do tonight? Try hitting up a happy hour at one of New York’s best waterfront bars or trying one of the 12 best boozy frozen drinks in the city. You could also enjoy the air conditioning at one of the best film events in New York this week or get wet 'n wild at Jeppe Hein's watery art installation "Please Touch The Art."
