Photographers Eric and Constance are typical parents: They have a two-year-old daughter, they cook homemade frittatas, and they’re constantly searching for a good babysitter. Oh, and they make their living by photographing people having sex. We chatted with Eric to bring you in on the, uh, action.…

So what’s going on in this photo? Well, that’s one of our client couples under the covers. Usually it’s couples, but sometimes it’s threesomes, orgies or people by themselves. They run the gamut from full-on exhibitionists to nervous newlyweds.

Take us through a typical shoot. What happens? We always meet with our clients first to answer all of their questions. Then on the day itself, the first thing we do is give them robes to put on. It helps them feel more comfortable, ease into it. It’s funny—some people walk in the door and can’t keep their hands off each other, while other people take a lot of warming up—sometimes we have to leave and come back in when they’re mid-intercourse.

And then you just start snapping pics. Is it ever awkward for you guys? Not at the shoots, but sometimes after. One time we went to deliver pictures to a couple. We walked into their apartment and the music was down low, drinks were poured…and the guy asked us to “stay for a drink.” But we never get physically involved. This isn’t ’80s photography, you know? We’re not doing cocaine off of hookers here. There’s a certain ethical responsibility that comes with our job, and we truly believe in the social responsibility of what we’re doing.

Which is what? What’s the message? That you’re beautiful and sexy exactly how you are. When you get the e-mail from the couple that’s like, “I never knew we could look so beautiful together,” that’s the gold.

What do you say when people ask you what you do at dinner parties? It’s always “Photography.” If they press, I take the blunt route: “We photograph sex.” That weeds out the people that are uncomfortable. When you bring up sexuality, you’re going to make some people uncomfortable.

So have you picked up any tips? We have, I won’t lie! Sometimes it’s like, “Hey, you picked me up by my ankles! Was that from…?” Yes, yes it was.
