We can all appreciate a good view, especially when it's off the coast of the Mediterranean sea. In Blue Spot's case, you get a 360º of Barcelona. Its uniqueness, though, comes from the fact that you see it from the perspective of the very entrance of the harbour. Truly a remarkable site, you get an unparalleled view of the city. On the eighth floor of the Ocean building, the restaurant is on a terrace complete with a creative cocktail lounge, which is essentially the cherry on top. The venue itself was designed by renown Brazilian architect Isay Weinfeld. When it comes to the kitchen, which was invested in by the one and only Pisha (Piqué and Shakira, that is), Blue Spot strays away from heavy seasoning or smothering the seafood in lemon juice, and instead prides itself in serving its food a bit more au naturel. "The idea is not to touch the seafood too much. They are tastes directly from the grilled fish or shellfish, but we add our special touch", explains Tiago Bonacina, the Blue Spot director. This restaurant, he continues, "is not a place to replete oneself, it is a place to try an excellent product, which is wild caught, and locally sourced from Barceloneta fish markets or small vendors". On the menu, you will find a long list of dishes from starters, meats, fish, soups, pastas and rice, each as enticing as the last. One of their noteworthy dishes is their fine, grilled cockles prepared with a subtle touch of curry. Another is their king crab, which already comes shel

La Mar Salada has positioned itself in recent years as one of the leading seafood restaurants in Barcelona. The owners and the chef not only focus on the seafood cuisine, but also the creative and respectful way of treating the marine products that often land a few meters from the premises. You will find spectacular stews and paellas, like their black and the 'de senyoret' rice with razorfish, monkfish and prawns.

You may miss Kaiku upon first glance, but it is a world apart from the upmarket seafood restaurants in the neighboorhood, but its dishes are sophisticated takes on the sea-side classics. The salad starter comes with shavings of foie or red fruit vinaigrette, and paella is given a rich and earthy spin with wild mushrooms. Book ahead, particularly for any chance of reserving one of the terrace tables that look out across the beach.

At Surf House you get the feel you're in a Southern California surfer hangout where there's a huge dose of a good time. The burgers, tuna tartare, sandwiches, salads, nachos and cakes are outstanding, and a great reward after a day of running, walking or just lying around at the beach. Be sure to check it out at night too, when the friendly bar staff serves up an array of scrumptious cocktails.

Barraca is a restaurant that cooks up classic rice dishes made with a modern and gourmet touch. The menu boasts six rice specialities that won't steer you wrong, including standouts with artichokes, squid and sausage (dry, light, very tasty) or a more filling paella with perfect rice and fish fillet, or the black rice casserole. Also popular are the rice with octopus, and the vegan one. Quintessential Barceloneta starters include croquettes, cod fritters and great seafood. Views of the sea and of Passeig Marítim are impressive, and most of the products are organic and local.

At the 'xiringuito' (beach bar) run by the Escribà family, you can dig into all kinds of rice dishes, seasonal seafood and excellent appetizers. We suggest the cured Spanish ham 'airbags', but you'll just have to try them yourself. Make sure to leave room for dessert, because you can't leave the table without having tried one of the cakes or sweets prepared by the family's bakeries.

At the end of the night, kick your shoes off and relax with a nice walk on the beach.
