Brisbane just got twice as lucky with the opening of the second Lucky Egg outlet, coddled safely inside West End's Good Time Bar. The Lucky Egg crew help slay your hunger with more than just wings and burgers: these staples are a given, but the menu is fleshed out with all kinds of chickeny goodness. Don't miss snack-sized karaage cups, shatteringly crisp Dorito popcorn chicken, and the Birdhaus Bowl filled with grilled chicken, rice and wok-flashed greens scattered with roasted peanuts, nutty sesame seeds, Thai basil, sambal and warming red chilli. Grab the flock and head on down for lunch or dinner any day but Sunday – you'll be clucking glad you did.
Ain't nothing sweeter than stumbling out of a Valley nightclub in the wee small hours and into the warm embrace of Brunswick Street's New York Slice for a hefty triangle of NY-style pizza. The classic menu is exactly that, a clipped list of only three thin-based beauties – Margherita, pepperoni and Hawaiian. We're kinda partial to the pepperoni after a big night out. The signature list boasts many, and customers with a particular penchant can build their own. Whatever you choose, make sure you fold the slice in half (Ryan Gosling in Crazy Stupid Love-style) and smash it like you mean it.
Betty is quickly claiming her territory along the east coast with new stores opening as fast as lightning. One of the freshest in the bunch is at the head of Westfield Chermside's eat street on the extremity of the shopping centre proper. Don't dismiss this chain as just another burger bar: Betty's burgers are good. They’re made with Angus beef or pork belly, fried chicken or 'shrooms', and you can fling on McClures American pickles or bacon for a few bucks extra. Finish on a sweet note with Betty's concretes – custard ice creams enriched even further with sauces, crumbles and toppings.
What a find! It's takeaway only at this Western Suburbs venue and there's not a burger or deep-fried nugget in sight. Instead, the gleaming glass cabinet is filled with salads of the non-mundane kind, and topped with buttery, flaky viennoiserie. The salad menu is as scrumptious as kale is good for you: say a Brussels sprout and kale Caesar with brioche crumb, or eggplant, zucchini and red pepper salad with pearls of cous cous, crunchy almonds and a creamy crumble of feta. There's a plethora of pulled meats to accompany, making Greens and Grains a saviour of meal-time sanity.
