They say Buenos Aires is the city that never sleeps… And if there is one place where this phrase truly comes to life, it is on Corrientes Avenue, which shines and dazzles both locals and tourists with its iconic marquees all year round.

Dramas, comedies, one-person shows, musicals. Premieres and revivals. Classics or avant-garde productions. On Corrientes Avenue, theater is in the air and there is something for every taste. Here are our recommendations of plays to enjoy the rich 2025 season.

1. Cuestión de Género

With Moria Casán and Jorge Marrale. Directed by Nelson Valente.

A successful and elegant designer receives the negative result of a medical test and, when sharing the news with her husband, a politician in the middle of an election campaign, takes the opportunity to reveal a secret she has been keeping since the beginning of their marriage. Catastrophes pile up, arguments heat up… and all that’s left is to beg for mercy for this family.

Fun fact: This comedy premiered with great success in 2022 in Paris starring Victoria Abril and Lionnel Astier.

2. Relatividad

With Gabriela Toscano and Luis Machín. Directed by Carlos Rivas.

On a cold winter day in 1949, with the echoes of World War II and the atomic bomb still lingering in the air, a mysterious woman approaches Albert Einstein on the street intending to interview him. What seems like a simple and charming conversation to cover the most well-known aspects of the eccentric scientist’s life gradually turns into a tense and unsettling meeting about an enigmatic event from the past that Einstein wants to hide.

Fun fact: The play was written by American playwright Mark Saint Germain, the same author of “The Last Freud Session.”

3. La Ballena

With Julio Chaves, Laura Oliva, Carolina Kopelioff, Máximo Meyer, and Emilia Mazer. Directed by Ricky Pashkus.

Charlie is a literature teacher struggling with his obesity while teaching online from his living room couch. In his final days, caught between decisions of his past and his desire for redemption, he tries to repair the damaged relationship with his daughter. Is it possible to heal old wounds and find a path back to love?

Fun fact: The Whale was adapted into a film starring Brendan Fraser, a role that earned him an Oscar for Best Actor.

4. Una Navidad de Mierda

With Verónica Llinás, Alejo García Pintos, Tomas Fonzi, and Anita Gutierrez. Directed by Peto Menahem and Verónica Llinás.

A family gathers to celebrate Christmas after three years without contact with Elena, the youngest daughter, who moved to Dublin after a family argument. Elena returns intending to introduce her partner, but something confuses everyone: her girlfriend is invisible to the rest of the family. The gathering reignites old conflicts and what starts as a festive dinner turns into a situation as absurd as it is revealing.

Fun fact: This play marks Verónica Llinás’s return to theater directing, this time accompanied by Peto Menahem.

5. La Cena de los Tontos

With Martín Bossi, Mike Amigorena, Laurita Fernandez, and cast. Directed by Marcos Carnevale

One of the highest-grossing comedies in the history of Buenos Aires theater is back on stage more than 20 years later, telling the story of a group of friends who organize weekly dinners where each one must bring an invited guest they consider to be "foolish" to mock them. However, one of these evenings will not go as expected, and everyone's life will change forever. The interesting fact is that Adrián Suar and Guillermo Francella were part of the original cast and are now the producers of the play.

6. La función que sale mal

Starring Diego Reinhold, Héctor Diaz, Freddy Villarreal, Dan Breitman, Victoria Almeida, and cast. Directed by Manuel Gonzalez Gil.

An international theatrical phenomenon seen by over two million spectators worldwide that tells the story of a crime… or maybe not. The actors of the Cornley Theater Society put all their effort into presenting a serious drama… but what ends up happening on stage is an absurd chaos: falling walls, actors forgetting their lines, props out of control, and a choreography of disaster that gives no respite.

7. El Jefe del Jefe

Starring Diego Peretti and Federico D’Elia. Directed by Javier Daulte.

A hilarious and biting comedy by Lars Von Trier (director of films such as Dogville and Dancer in the Dark) in which a businessman decides to hire an unemployed actor to pretend to be the head of his company in order to sell it to a group of foreign investors — not knowing that the actor will take certain “liberties” with the assigned script.

8. El hombre inesperado

Performed and directed by Inés Estévez and Germán Palacios.

A charming play by acclaimed Yazmina Reza (Art, Life x 3) that depicts an unforeseen encounter in a train carriage between two lonely souls who engage in a conversation full of poetry, humor, and unpredictable twists that could change their lives.

9. Extraña Pareja

Starring Diego Pérez and Bicho Gomez. Directed by Carlos Olivieri.

The unforgettable comedy written by Neil Simon that narrates the story of two divorced friends in the hectic city of New York who decide to live together to overcome loneliness, but their completely opposite personalities — one obsessive and meticulous, the other messy and relaxed — lead to a chaotic and hilarious coexistence.

10. Sala de Espera

Starring Pablo Rago and Diego Cremonesi. Written and directed by Nicolás Repetto.

In the “waiting room,” something akin to purgatory, Adrián meets Ignacio, his youthful friend who died two years ago. In a dialogue filled with emotion, they reflect on their paths. What did each of them do with their lives, and what was the reason it was worth living? While they await their uncertain fate, they question their bond in a sharp verbal duel. Who deserves eternal life and who must burn in hell?

11. Â¿Quién es quién?

Starring Luis Brandoni and Soledad Silveyra. Directed by Héctor Díaz.

The year kicks off strong with a theatrical event: for the first time, Luis Brandoni and Soledad Silveyra appear together on stage, playing two beloved characters in a fresh and sharp comedy that delves into the life of a couple trapped in a routine.

A night awaiting dinner with friends triggers a cascade of hilarious situations that force them to reflect on love, communication, and the pursuit of happiness. Undoubtedly, it's a great opportunity to see two of the country's greatest actors clash in an acting duel.

12. Druk

Starring Pablo Echarri, Juan Gil Navarro, Osqui Guzmán, and Carlos Portaluppi. Directed by Javier Daulte.

A theatrical adaptation by Thomas Vinterberg and Claus Flygare, based on the Oscar-winning film “Another Round” by Thomas Vinterberg and Tobias Lindholm.

What’s the story about? Four middle-aged friends, teachers at the same high school, lead monotonous, uneventful lives, aware that the world of youthful possibilities has passed them by. During a dinner, someone recalls a curious theory by a psychiatrist who claims humans are born with a 0.5% alcohol deficit, so to function optimally and boost creativity, one should consume that amount daily. They decide to test the theory. The results are surprising. But both enthusiasm and intake increase, and each must face the consequences.

13. Mi Amiga y Yo

With Sebastián Presta, Josefina Scaglione, Sabrina Lara, Leandro Serodino. Directed by Diego Reinhold

Sebastián Presta has become one of the most in-demand comedians in the theatrical scene, with more than 100,000 spectators in the last three years. This new project finds him directed by Diego Reinhold and accompanied by the talented Josefina Scaglione in a fresh comedy full of humor and unexpected twists, telling the story of two friends who, if they dare, might become something more.

14. Pundonor

Starring Andrea Garrote. Directed by Rafael Spregelburd.

With eight seasons in Buenos Aires, two in Madrid, and a hugely successful tour in Spain, Pride says goodbye to Buenos Aires stages. Claudia Pérez Espinosa is a university professor, Doctor of Sociology, who returns to the classroom after a few months’ leave — but the class she must teach is constantly interrupted due to her fragile condition and becomes unpredictable and uncontrollable.
