The City of Buenos Aires offers endless activities for the whole family, but this time we want to encourage you to get out a bit and take the opportunity to discover other places less than 400 kilometers from the Capital.

The list includes everything from nature reserves to a hedge maze, a museum that recreates old scenes in real size, to theme parks and ranches where you can experience a true day in the countryside. A very varied and original range of options to break the routine with the whole family.

1. San Antonio de Areco – Nature and a Giant Maze

Winter vacations are celebrated in a big way in this town 113 kilometers from Buenos Aires City. The first stop we suggest is Laberinto Pampa, an immersive natural space made of bamboo at Estancia La Cinacina. The experience includes a walk through a unique area that invites you to get lost and find a sensory and playful experience for all ages.

To continue the tour, we recommend visiting La Olla de Cobre, the “alfajor arquero” ranked among the top 10 in the world according to Taste Atlas. You can then visit the Ricardo Güiraldes Gaucho Museum to learn about rural life and traditional trades. It is open Thursday to Monday, from 11:15 AM to 4:30 PM.

2. Estancia La Alameda in Chascomús for a Day in the Countryside

There are many ranches near Buenos Aires, but we chose La Alameda because it is located within a nature reserve and offers many family-friendly activities. The day starts around 10:30 AM when the gates open. Then, there’s a guided tour of the historic farmhouse and lunch at the ranch’s restaurant. In the afternoon, enjoy a tractor ride through the reserve and visit the agroecological garden. The day ends with a delicious afternoon tea. There is a farm with animals and a forest full of birds.

They also offer accommodation in glamping domes or boutique hotel rooms that can host up to six people.

Located 220 kilometers from Buenos Aires City, Pardo is one of the province’s Tourist Towns. The home of writer Adolfo Bioy Casares, it offers many attractions, but we recommend Yamay Ecotourism, a glamping site with one of the best night skies in the area, free from light pollution. At this time of year, you can see constellations like the Southern Cross and the Magellanic Clouds, two satellite galaxies of the Milky Way.

Yamay offers accommodation in yurts—tents inspired by Mongolian nomadic dwellings. They also host activities like walking tours, birdwatching, permaculture workshops, natural building, green roofs, organic gardening, and sustainable stoves. Reservations can be made here. More glamping options in Buenos Aires are available here.

This destination is a bit farther than the others but definitely worth it. About 350 kilometers from Buenos Aires lies Iriarte, a small town near the Santa Fe border whose main attraction is its namesake museum. Why is it considered Argentina’s best museum? Because it is basically a tour through the country’s railway and rural history and culture.

The museum features a life-sized replica of a typical historical town from any Argentine province, with old facades and cobblestone streets. There are also sheds with rural machinery from different decades, antique cars, and a replica of a train station with its locomotive.
