In the heart of Manzano Histórico —a place whose name carries the memory of José de San Martín’s passage through these lands— a dream was born, one that comes back to life every year as it rides across the Andes. That story is what drives Manzano Adventure, a company that transformed San Martín’s legacy into an experience that not only covers kilometers, but also connects history, nature and personal transformation.

Behind the project are David Guiñazú and “Negro” Montalvini, partners who have spent years developing an authentic, professional experience that combines the Andes Crossing on horseback with trekking in the high mountains. From the beginning, the goal has been to revive San Martín’s epic journey in a genuine way: following in the footsteps of the Liberator and his army, but from a more experiential rather than historical perspective. Every year, the team renews its commitment to a journey that blends adventure, tradition and a deep respect for the mountains.

How long is the Andes Crossing and what is the journey like?

The Andes Crossing lasts between five and seven days, with departures beginning on December 30 and continuing through early April. Along the route, travelers traverse breathtaking landscapes, from the valleys of Manzano to the 4,300-meter-high Portillo Piuquenes, a pass used both by Captain Lemos and San Martín himself.

The ascent is often one of the most memorable moments, along with reaching the international border, when the group celebrates the achievement with hugs, photos and tears. The journey is designed so that each participant can truly experience the mountain from within, always accompanied by guides, muleteers and an experienced team that knows the terrain by heart.

The criollo spirit also comes alive every night. Steaming stews, slow-cooked meats and the asado prepared by the muleteers over the fire are a fundamental part of the experience. Those moments around the campfire, with wine and conversation, become universal—bringing together people from different countries under the same starry sky.

When does the 2025/2026 Andes Crossing take place?

With the start of a new season, Manzano Adventure is preparing to offer an even more complete experience. This year, the focus is on building high-altitude camps that combine nature, comfort and shelter in strategic points along the route.

Why choose Manzano Adventure?

One of their key advantages is that they are the only company that completes the crossing in both directions: from Mendoza to Santiago and from Santiago to Mendoza. This double route meets the growing international demand.

Technology also plays a crucial role in the mountains. “What began with lights and solar chargers later incorporated GPS systems, and now includes Starlink satellite connection, ensuring constant communication, safety and better coordination throughout the journey,” says Emilio Montalvini.

Groups are small (10 to 15 people), which allows for close and personalized attention. Most travelers come from Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Brazil, but adventurers also arrive from Europe, Oceania and North America. “Some come for their love of horses, others for personal challenge; but everyone leaves transformed,” Montalvini adds.

Among countless stories, some moments leave a lasting mark. On one expedition, a young mother who had recently lost her daughter burst into tears upon learning that the mare she was assigned to ride was named Mora—just like her child. That deep, symbolic moment reminded the team that beyond the physical journey, what happens in the mountains can have a healing power.

What impact does the Andes Crossing have on the community and the environment?

The Andes Crossing is closely tied to Manzano Histórico, a town in Tunuyán that transforms each season with the movement of travelers and expeditions. The activity generates a positive impact throughout the area: from lodging and local suppliers to homemade products, country bread and the services that support the groups’ passage.

Sustainability is a central commitment. All camps are equipped with chemical toilets, and waste is transported by mules to ensure nothing is left in the mountains. In addition, Manzano Adventure is the only company legally established in both countries, allowing for safe, coordinated and responsible operation. In Chile, their agency Manzano Travel expands the experience with complementary options: lodging, winery tours, rafting and getaways to the Pacific coast.

What does the experience include?

The full experience includes full board with traditional criollo meals and Uco Valley wines, the use of horses and mules, the company of specialized guides and muleteers, transfers in both Mendoza and Chile, one night of lodging in Chile, Starlink satellite connection, liability insurance and evacuation protocols.

Do you need previous experience to complete the Andes Crossing on horseback?

No previous horse-riding experience is required, but good physical and mental condition is essential to fully enjoy the journey. If you have any medical condition, it’s recommended to consult a professional beforehand.
