Agustín Bernasconi stars alongside Wanda Nara in ¿Querés ser mi hijo?, a romantic comedy directed by Hernán Guerschuny. In an exclusive interview with Time Out, the actor opens up about age gaps in relationships, dreams waiting for their chance to come true and his experience working with Nara on his film debut.

The film follows Lucía (Wanda Nara), a 42-year-old woman who discovers that her partner has been unfaithful and loses her job. After moving back into her old apartment, she meets Javier (Agustín Bernasconi), her 22-year-old neighbour, whose constant parties keep her awake at night.

When a job opportunity leads her to lie about her family life and claim she has a 22-year-old son, Lucía strikes a deal with Javier: he will pretend to be her son in exchange for being allowed to throw as many parties as he likes.

Agustín Bernasconi on Wanda Nara: “I couldn't have asked for a better co-star”

For Agustín Bernasconi, sharing the lead role with Wanda Nara was an opportunity to get to know her better. Although they had already met, filming brought them closer and gave them time to develop their characters together. “It was a really lovely experience that surprised me in every way. Even though I already knew her, I got to know her a little better through our day-to-day interactions,” he recalls.

Preparation began well before filming and played a key role in building the chemistry between Lucía and Javier. “We started working on our characters and finding a natural connection between us long before filming began. It was honestly incredible. I couldn't have asked for a better co-star. We really supported each other throughout the month and a half we spent shooting,” he says.

Beyond their work on set, Bernasconi also came away with a personal impression of the actress that differed from her public image. “When you don't know her personally, you hear the name Wanda Nara and imagine a whole world that's very different from your own, understandably, because of everything surrounding her,” he explains. He adds: “What I found was someone incredibly down-to-earth, quite similar to me, relaxed and low-key.”

Love and age gaps

For Bernasconi, the film explores the prejudices that still surround age gaps in romantic relationships. “It touches on several topics that will spark debate about love and age when it comes to relationships,” he explains. “For a long time, it's been fairly accepted for an older man to date a younger woman, and everyone applauds it. But when it's the other way around, it's judged much more harshly,” he says.

The story encourages audiences to question why an age gap provokes different reactions depending on which partner is older. The relationship between Lucía and Javier also explores other people's expectations and the choices individuals make about their own lives.

Daring to follow your dreams

Beyond the romance, Bernasconi highlights another important aspect of Javier's journey: the importance of making decisions and having the courage to pursue your dreams. “It touches on a key aspect of my character, at a crucial age when you have to make a decision and dare to pursue a dream. If there's something you're passionate about, you're at a point in life where you need to find the courage to take that step,” he explains.

Javier's story intertwines with Lucía's, as she too needs to reconsider her choices and rethink her future. While she tries to break free from a life that no longer makes her happy, he faces the possibility of forging a different path. Through its two main characters, ¿Querés ser mi hijo? combines the twists and misunderstandings of a romantic comedy with a reflection on prejudice and personal aspirations.
