University degrees: what’s worth studying today?

How to choose what to study based on what you love and what the market demands.

Choosing what to study isn’t easy. With so many options, existential doubts, and the classic “How are you going to make a living?”, sometimes you need to pause, look around, and understand what’s happening today: what young people are looking for, what companies are demanding, and how families can support the decision without adding pressure—turning it into a motivating new beginning instead.

We spoke with Alexis Genuth, a vocational guidance expert, professor at UCES, and CEO of Interuniversidades.com, who helped us understand what motivates today’s university students, what the market needs, and which degrees are currently the most popular.

Beyond What’s "Convenient": Studying What You Truly Want

Many young people still find themselves torn between pursuing a traditional career or daring to follow their true passion. The result? Nearly 60% of new students drop out shortly after starting their studies, according to data from Interuniversidades.com. “That’s why it’s essential to listen to your inner drive,” says Alexis. “Because when something genuinely excites us, it’s easier to sustain and envision it in the long term.”

Desire acts as a driving force, a compass. One question that can help uncover it, according to Alexis, is: “If you never had to work again, what would you still do just for the joy of it?” That answer can be a great starting point for exploring degree options aligned with what you truly want.

Flexible Degrees with Career Opportunities

Today, in a world shaped by open economies and digital cultures, young people are looking for more than just a diploma. They want university degrees that offer flexibility, adaptability to changing scenarios, and real-world impact.

It’s no longer just about choosing “what gets you a job,” but about finding a path that blends passion, purpose, and market demand. That’s why there’s growing interest in degrees like:

  • Psychology – driven by the rise of emotional well-being, mental health awareness, and new ways of supporting others.

  • Multimedia Advertising, Communication, and Public Relations – because brands communicate differently now and need creative, empathetic minds.

  • Marketing and International Trade – because business knows no borders, and being able to sell (with both head and heart) is key.

  • Human Resources – blending strategy, technology, and something timeless: human connection.

  • Veterinary Medicine and Environmental Sciences – because caring for animals and the planet is a calling on the rise.

The Student Profile Has Also Changed

After the pandemic, a new student type has emerged: the digital learner, someone who prefers online classes and wants to learn by doing, in touch with reality. UCES offers both in-person and distance learning, which is why it appeals to a wide range of students.

“Today, companies are looking for more than just theory. They want people who can lead in complex environments. And that’s something you learn in community, with professors who are active in their fields,” Alexis explains.

What if you already chose a degree but feel your calling lies elsewhere? Good news: you’re not starting from scratch—you’re building on your experience and applying it to something new. According to Alexis, “University should support these transitions—not just train young beginners, but also help adults reinvent themselves.”

At UCES, it’s already common to see adults returning to study, thanks to flexible tracks, modular classes, and programs designed for those with established lives. And they thrive—because they’re studying with purpose and making the most of their time. “Redirecting your vocation is more important than simply finding it. Because it’s about who you are now, not just who you dreamed of being at 18,” Alexis says.

More and more people are realizing that vocation isn’t fixed or final—it can evolve and be updated throughout life. And Alexis emphasizes that university is there to support those transitions: “It’s no longer just a building or a diploma. It’s an ecosystem meant to support your life path.”
