The ever-popular Zuney Burgers officially opened at Time Out Market Cape Town yesterday. Forces behind the burger brand, Henning Klopper and Siv Ngesi, joined the Market's team to bring a lively evening that celebrated the smash!

We make it our business to curate and share the best foodie experience in this city. And seeing that come to life at the Time Out Market is such a treat, especially with a home-grown burger experience like Zuney. Yes, they pack a definite local-is-lekker and responsible punch!
City expert Richard Holmes called it one of his best burgers in Cape Town! Now that's saying something.
“Because of the extra marbling in the Wagyu mince, and the fact that Zuney is a smash burger done on a searing-hot flat-top, the caramelisation - the Maillard reaction, if you really want to get technical - on the patty is amazing," says Richard.
"There’s a crisp, fatty, juiciness to the meat that’s just so well balanced by their house pickles and sauce. It’s definitely one of my best burgers in Cape Town. When I first tasted Zuney at their Kloof Street branch about two years ago, I knew they were destined for big things, so it’s great to see them expand into the Time Out Market,” adds Richard.
“Another thing I love about the Zuney burger is that you can eat it with your hands. It’s not one of these towering burgers with onion rings and all sorts of things on top, that just topples into a hot mess when you try to tackle it. Beer in one hand, Zuney burger in the other. It’s perfect for the Marke."
Ah, very good point you make there, Richard!
We were blown away that Zuney caters to plant-based diners! Gosh, the number of times we heard Wagyu in one evening - although we were not complaining - we wouldn't have expected a vegan option.
Ishani Chetty, Time Out South Africa's Social Media guru, has been a vegetarian her whole life - and even she was surprised, "given Zuney's positioning and core brand offering."
"While Zuney might be known for its exceptional Wagyu offering, the vegan burger, which features a tempeh and black bean patty with mushroom truffle sauce, shredded lettuce, pickles and just the right amount of their ‘vegan house sauce’, is flavourful, filling and offers an expected crunch with every bite. Also, bonus, the bun is even Vegan!" says Ishani.
If ever a burger had a cult following, this launch showed it. A lively mix of well-known faces, from comedian Mark Lottering and rugby legend Bryan Habana to chef Scott Parker and politician Mmusi Maimane, adding a strong local flavour to the night.
The vibe stayed high throughout the evening with DJs keeping the energy up, and Stella Artois hosted a special on-tap booth for the event.
With its focus on responsibly sourced, farm-to-table Wagyu and bold, uncomplicated flavours, Zuney’s arrival adds another crowd-pulling stop to the ever-busy Time Out Market Cape Town menu. And judging by the launch night, the smash burgers are already settling in nicely.
