On 2 February 1659, South Africa's incredible wine journey officially began, with wine made from Cape-grown grapes documented for the very first time.

By the mid-17th century, the region had become a crucial stop along global sea routes, where fertile land and favourable conditions encouraged cultivation - and what we have today is the envy of many around the world.

Since that glorious day (we say as we raise a glass to our winemakers), the wine industry in South Africa has taken off, sparking a tradition that has evolved over generations.

Celebrated annually, the South African Wine Birthday honours the origins of an industry that has grown into one of the Cape’s defining cultural expressions and most important industries.

So how exactly does one celebrate such an important day in our history?

Well, One&Only Cape Town - known as the pinnacle of ultra-luxury design, authentic experiences, and genuine hospitality - will be hosting an event that truly honours the legacy and importance of the South African wine industry.

What's happening at One&Only Cape Town?

On Friday, 30 January, from 16h00 to 20h00, a celebration of the 367th South African Wine Birthday will take place at One&Only Cape Town, under the theme 'A Squeeze of Orange'.

This year is all about amber hues and the artistry involved, with orange wine given its chance to shine. Known for its depth, texture, and layered character, this style of wine offers something different to familiar pours, but is no less important.

Which winemakers will be showcased?

To make for a fun-filled adventure, One&Only Cape Town has created a bespoke Wine Route Map that encourages attendees to chart their own path across the resort, moving between tastings, pairings, and surprises at their own pace.

Across the resort’s Vista Deck and surrounding canals, 20 distinguished wine estates will pour a curated selection of their finest wines. Guests can sip renowned labels such as Waterford, Graham Beck, Hidden Valley, Vergelgen, and Steenberg, with many more of the region's best bringing their own unique flavour to the celebrations.

This collection of some of the finest winemakers South Africa has to offer will lend itself to an experience of diversity, from sparkling Cap Classique to expressive whites, elegant reds, and the featured orange wines.

To add an extra layer of depth to the event, winemakers will be in attendance to share the stories behind each label, giving wine lovers extra insight into the creativity and philosophy that shapes every glorious bottle.

The perfect pairing

While you know the wine will be flowing, the food is just as important at a celebration such as this. Therefore, culinary experiences have been carefully crafted by One&Only Cape Town to complement and elevate the wines on offer.

A lamb spit braai will deliver a succulent and smokey flavour, while interspersed throughout the afternoon will be whimsical touches of a strawberry garden and carefully selected ROOI offerings, reminding guests that no wine experience is complete without some tasty food.

And if that's not enough...

What's a birthday celebration without some music and theatre? Adding rhythm to the event, there will be a ceremonial birthday sabrage (the art of opening a bottle with a saber!), bottles will be opened with theatrical precision, and live music will set a vibrant tone.

In terms of the dress code, attendees are encouraged to take inspiration from the theme, 'A Squeeze of Orange'.
