Don’t want to leave your four-legged family behind when travelling? You won’t have to if you’re staying at Cape Town’s luxurious Mount Nelson, a Belmond hotel, as this iconic five-star property has just unveiled a host of new pet-friendly offerings.

'The Nellie has long welcomed unique guests within its storied 125-year history. This year we are excited to delight your canine friends with offerings and amenities that take the notion of being pet-friendly to a new level,' says Tiago Sarmento, Managing Director of Belmond Southern Africa.

You’ll now find five dedicated pet-friendly rooms on the ground floor of the hotel, offering easy access to the hotel’s expansive estate and gardens. To ensure a pleasant stay for hounds and humans, a maximum of two pets are allowed in each of the five rooms.

And, as you’d expect from the Belmond brand, the attention to detail is as impressive for four-legged guests as it is for their two-legged chaperones.

There’s a separate menu of treats for dogs sitting down for the hotel’s famous Afternoon Tea experience, while personalised welcome cards and healthy treats are offered on arrival. When it comes to in-room amenities, expect bespoke food and water bowls and custom-made velvet pillow beds for a comfy night’s sleep.

They are all designed and produced by Chommies – local slang for a 'good buddy' – a Cape Town-based design brand that sells an exclusive range of luxury pet accessories. Offering everything from rope leads to beaded collars, they are designed and crafted in their Cape Town studio to up the fashion quota for both dogs and their owners.

Chommies has now created a unique range of products for the Mount Nelson’s pet-friendly offering, ranging from 'everyday essentials' (think poo-bag holders) to beautiful leashes and pet passport covers made from indigenous leather. The Mount Nelson x Chommies range – inspired by the hotel’s iconic colour scheme and surrounds, will be on sale at the hotel as well as online for worldwide delivery. Ten percent of proceeds from sales of the Mount Nelson x Chommies collection will be donated to The Underdog Project, a local non-profit organisation working with vulnerable children and dogs in Cape Town.

Dogs are welcome in all hotel outlets except for the Librisa Spa, Chef’s Table, and The Red Room by Chefs Warehouse, with a pet-friendly concierge on hand to help out with any queries. Though there’s no size restriction, dogs must be accompanied and on a lead at all times, and may not be left alone in the room.

Why not fill up on water and take the pooch on one of the Best Day Hikes in Cape Town.
