Stellenbosch Restaurant Safari serves up the town, one plate at a time

One dinner reservation that comes with a built-in walking tour and, happily, three chances to order something delicious.

Stellenbosch is inviting food lovers to turn dinner into an adventure with the Taste Stellenbosch Restaurant Safari, a guided culinary journey through the historic town centre.

The concept is deliciously simple: three restaurants, three courses and one evening spent exploring Stellenbosch on foot.

Guests meet their guide at 6pm, then head to their first restaurant for a starter, move on to a second venue for the main course, and finish with dessert somewhere else.

Between bites, the guide brings the streets to life with stories and snippets from Stellenbosch’s fascinating past.

It’s a suitable format for a town where food, wine, heritage and hospitality are intimately intertwined. Taste Stellenbosch describes the destination as a place where “every meal becomes part of a bigger story”, with local ingredients, chefs and winemakers helping shape its distinctive dining culture.

The Restaurant Safari takes that idea literally, swapping a conventional dinner for a progressive feast through some of the town’s best-known culinary precincts.

Three routes, nine restaurants

The first route kicked off on Thursday, 20 August, around Ryneveld Street, with courses shared between Bertha, De Warenmarkt and The Wine Glass. The three venues rotate between starter, main and dessert depending on the night.

The Lower Dorp Street Route, running Wednesday, 26 August to Friday, 28 August, moves between De Vier, Spek & Bone and Volkskombuis, offering another mix of flavours and atmospheres.

Then, from Thursday, 3 September to Saturday, 5 September, the Church Street Route brings together Motherdough, Genki and The Hussar Grill.

The intimacy of a small group

The small-group format is part of the appeal. Depending on the route, groups are limited to six or 10 guests, making the evening feel more intimate and social than a typical restaurant crawl.

And there’s plenty of character along the way. De Warenmarkt operates from an 18th-century building and draws on the Cape’s trading and culinary heritage. The restaurant combines contemporary dining with a distinctly historic setting.

Stellenbosch’s central dining scene has also been singled out for its concentration of restaurants, bars and food experiences within easy walking distance.
