On August 9, 1956, about 20,000 women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria. Freedom songs rang out across the square.

Anti-apartheid activists Helen Joseph and Lilian Ngoyi added their voices to the growing chorus, chanting “Wathint’ abafazi, wathint’ imbokodo” (You strike a woman, you strike a rock). It was their rallying cry against apartheid pass laws restricting freedom of movement.

Today, 9 August (Women’s Day) stands as a reminder of that day. For thousands, it represents how far we’ve come as a nation and how far we have yet to go.

Below, we’ve created a round-up of Women’s Month events in and around Cape Town, from gallery exhibitions to empowerment discussions.
