There was a time when all we wanted from a weekend cottage was a decent place to make a braai. Today? It’s the wood-fired hot tub that’s the must-have accessory when booking a place to escape for a few nights. And happily, close to Cape Town, we are spoiled for choice.

From vineyard hideaways in the Winelands to beach houses on the West Coast, mountain cabins in the Overberg and riverside boltholes on the Southern Cape, we’ve rounded up some of the most unforgettable escapes that bring a strong hot tub game. Some are properly romantic, built for couples, while others are large enough for you to bring friends and family along. Some are rustic and off-grid, while others are design-forward and luxurious (with prices to match). What they all have in common is that sought-after sense of escape: fresh air, open views, and a steamy hot tub to look forward to.

Whether you’re in the mood for a boutique tent at Boschendal, a beachfront soak in St Helena Bay, or a quiet pod above Theewaterskloof, these are some of our favourite hot-tub cabins near Cape Town right now. Pack the firelighters, bring a book, and plan on staying in.

Where to fire up a hot tub close to Cape Town!

1. Rocky Falls #2, Bain’s Kloof

Set in a private nature reserve at the eastern end of Bain’s Kloof Pass, Rocky Falls #2 is situated in a truly scenic stretch of mountain. It’s all dramatic fynbos-covered slopes, river pools, and panoramic views across the Wolseley farmlands. Not least from the delightful hot tub, which is set a little apart from the house but connected by a wooden deck. Rocky Falls #2 is a fully off-grid cottage accommodating six guests across three bedrooms, making it perfect for families or a small group of friends. Self-check-in is straightforward via lockbox, and it has the rare bonus of being pet-friendly. While it feels remote, it is only a little over 90 minutes from Cape Town, making it an ideal weekend getaway.

The hot tub is one of the headline amenities and a clear guest favourite, making it the obvious place to end the day after walks, swims or simply sitting out in the reserve with the mountain air around you.

2. Swallow Cabin, Tulbagh

At Swallow Cabin in the Tulbagh winelands, the hot tub takes centre stage. Sure, there are great vineyard views and all, but here all eyes will be on the tub. That’s thanks to the clever way it’s integrated into the indoor-outdoor living area of the cabin itself, with a wooden deck, outdoor loungers, and a braai area all forming part of the same space. And if the hot tub's not enough warm water for you, there’s a freestanding outdoor bath on offer as well! Indoors, it’s a compact space with a studio-style layout that blends the bedroom, lounge, and kitchen into a single open space. The décor is modern with a country sort of style, but really, the focus here is on being outdoors. With just the one queen bed and cosy amounts of living space, this is a spot for couples only.

3. Blou Huisie, St Helena Bay

At Blou Huisie, the beach is so close it almost becomes part of the house. Set right on Britannia Beach in St Helena Bay, expect the sound of the waves to be the soundtrack of your stay, and sandy feet to add to the charm. The location is unbeatable, and once you step inside, you’ll find the decor relaxed rather than fancy, with three en-suite bedrooms that make it particularly good for families or a small group.

Two of the rooms have queen-sized beds and open straight towards the beach, while the loft room, with four single beds and wide sea views, is perfect for children or friends sharing. The open-plan living area is designed for relaxing, with a fireplace for cooler evenings and folding doors that open the entire front of the house onto the deck and views beyond. And, of course, the hot tub, which here sits almost on the beach itself, facing the ocean and alongside the braai area. For sunsets with a soak, you’ll struggle to find a better spot.

4. Camp Canoe

One of the smartest hot-tub stays in the Winelands, Camp Canoe is pitched on a quiet corner of Boschendal estate between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, with tents set high on the slopes of the Simonsberg for wide vineyard views and very little passing traffic. It may be billed as glamping, but it feels more like a boutique hotel under canvas. There are seven spacious tented suites, with king-size beds, generous en-suite bathrooms, and design details that lift it well beyond the typical canvas-and-camp-chair setup. The wood-fired zinc hot tubs are a big part of the charm. Located in a private setting outside each tent, they are large enough for two (perhaps four) and the staff will even light them before you arrive so you can step from your car straight into the tub! Otherwise, Boschendal’s mountain-bike trails are right on the doorstep, so horse rides, garden tours, and the farm’s restaurants and shop are all within easy reach.

5. So Hi, Kouebokkeveld

Deep within the Kouebokkeveld mountains, So Hi is perfectly suited for travellers seeking ultimate peace and quiet amidst rugged mountain landscapes. Firstly, you’ll need a 4x4 to reach So Hi, but if your vehicle isn’t up to it, the friendly owners will gladly drive you there. Once arrived, you can explore the farm’s hiking routes, waterfalls, and streams at your own pace. There are spots to swim, but naturally, it’s the hot tub that steals the show: a classic star-gazing while soaking setup, ideal for cold evenings or relaxing tired legs after a hike. Besides the tub, the cottage is simply gorgeous. It’s a bolthole for couples, but can actually sleep up to four (a living area set up with two additional single beds), so it’s equally a good bet for families. It’s self-catering, with a well-equipped kitchen, and the bedroom has an ultra-king bed with high-end winter/summer bedding; a nice touch. No wonder So Hi has a perfect five-star rating on Airbnb!

6. House on the Hill, Heidelberg

Not far from the N2, just outside the southern Cape town of Heidelberg, this trio of cottages on a working sheep farm is perfect for a group of friends looking for a getaway where everyone has their own space but remains close enough for lazy days of catching up. Each of the three cottages features its own wood-fired hot tub, accessible directly from the private deck, ensuring no family or couple feels left out.

Each cottage sleeps four across two bedrooms, with one queen room and a second room with two three-quarter beds. Inside, it’s practical rather than design-focused, but comes very well equipped for a weekend break. The fully equipped kitchen includes a coffee machine, while the lounge has a Netflix-ready TV. But rather get outside. There’s a farm dam for swimming and canoeing, but the thing people love about this getaway is the sense of uncomplicated country living. Fresh milk and farm eggs are included, the views are wide, and you’ll soon feel yourself shifting down a gear.

The cottages are set on a working sheep farm, but if you want to get out and explore, Witsand is about 30km away, while the Grootvadersbosch Nature reserve is close by for forest walks.

7. KolKol

This list wouldn’t be complete without including the getaway that truly kick-started the hot tub trend and today supplies many of the cottages you’ll find on this list. While many may know KolKol only for its hot tub brand – including the ubiquitous plastic tubs – it’s a must-visit destination in its own right. Set on the Van der Stel Pass near Bot River (making it one of the closest to Cape Town options on this list too), KolKol offers both the original Mountain Cabins and the newer Fynbos Pods. The cabins are the more classic option, with a rustic-log look, stone fireplaces and a cosier, more traditional mountain lodge atmosphere. The pods lean towards a more contemporary style, featuring a stronger design focus and more modern interior finishes. What’s shared by both is the fynbos-covered slopes and open mountain views, best enjoyed from the OGs of the weekend hot tub.

8. Hidden Haven, Hemel-en-Aarde

If you enjoy a touch of luxury – and the fact that it’s less than two hours from Cape Town – Hidden Haven is a great option for both families and friends travelling together. Set in the Hemel-en-Aarde valley, this four-sleeper retreat offers all the mountain and fynbos seclusion you want from a cabin stay, while remaining close to the valley’s wine farms, restaurants, and farm stalls.

You’ll find two en-suite bedrooms, and the décor at Hidden Haven is decidedly upscale. There’s a sense of minimalist style throughout, with white walls and muted tones. Smeg appliances in the kitchen add an extra touch of luxury. A highlight is the separate entertainment area, where you’ll find the braai and pizza oven, as well as the hot tub. It’s shaded for sunny days, while offering fabulous fynbos views. Speaking of fynbos, there are lovely walking trails on the property, including to a waterfall with a swimming spot.

9. Camissa Farm, Banhoek

Set in the Banhoek Conservancy outside Stellenbosch, Camissa Farm feels a world away from the popular Cape Winelands, yet it’s just a 15-minute drive over the Helshoogte Pass to Stellenbosch.  But you might be tempted to settle in and never leave.

The setting is the real drawcard at Camissa Farm, where wild mountain slopes, vineyard views and a 60-hectare regenerative farm are threaded with hiking and biking trails. You’ll stay in Agama, an open-plan Scandinavian-style timber cabin for two that’s been thoughtfully designed as a romantic eco hideaway. It’s a studio layout with a queen bed, kitchen, WiFi and staggered decks, all with plenty of privacy. There’s also lake access, wild swimming on the farm, mountain-bike tracks and even an infrared sauna on the property. The hot tub comes tucked away on the side of the cottage for privacy, and in step with the sauna and swimming on site (makes for a full weekend of wellness).

10. Reflect, Montagu

Do cottages for couples get any cuter? I’m not sure they do. Reflect makes the most of its setting, perched above a small farm dam near Montagu, and the deck gazing over water, mountains, and vines gives it a very particular sense of place. This is a couples-only stay built on a tiny-home concept, with one bedroom, one bathroom, and a queen bed. It has all the essentials, but really, you’re here to be in this landscape. And the best place to be is the cute hot tub set at the edge of the deck, with farm views stretching to the horizon.

11. Sunbird Chalet, Stilbaai

Wild Olive Farm is one of my favourite long-weekend getaways in the Cape, and I’ve visited many times over the past decade. Set on the banks of the Goukou River, 10kms from Stilbaai, it’s a haven of riverside peace and quiet, perfect for those who love lazy days on the river. While I’ve always booked the larger Apple Tree Cottage (more space for families), down on the riverside you’ll find Sunbird Chalet, which sits right above the water to make the most of the abundant birdlife and golden sunset light. Indoors, the chalet is a compact studio setup sleeping four (one queen bed, one bunk bed), but is well-equipped for self-catering, with a fireplace for winter and – the highlight – a cosy hot tub tucked to one side of the wide deck. Beyond the hot tub, another great reason to stay here is the on-site Dusty Road Farmstall, where guests can buy produce from the permaculture garden as well as fresh bread, free-range eggs, jams and preserves.

12. Eirini House, Elands Bay

From the mountains to the deep blue sea, this escape is perfect for gathering your mates and heading to this famously laid-back West Coast town. E-Bay is home to one of South Africa’s best surf breaks, but you’ll also be able to enjoy beach walks, seaside restaurants, and relaxed time on the coast. The house is more spacious than a simple mountain cabin, sleeping up to eight with three bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a loft with two single beds. All three bedrooms are en suite. Travelling with kids? The property is fully enclosed, which makes things easier. The décor is light, bright, and breezy, with doors opening onto spacious decks, where a large hot tub – plus an outdoor shower – is perfect for post-surf soaks.

13. Mountain Eco-Pod, Villiersdorp

Surrounded by fynbos, gazing over Theewaterskloof Dam (hopefully full of water), the Mountain Eco-Pod near Villiersdorp is another stunning spot that’s as beautiful as its setting. It’s a micro-stay built around a converted shipping container, but it certainly lacks for no luxuries. Thoughtfully expanded into an open-plan eco pod for two, you’ll find a king-size bed, a cosy lounge nook, a fully equipped kitchen, and a spacious double shower. The small deck wraps around a hot tub that makes the most of the mountain surroundings.
