For Suga, the essence of Cape Town is found not only in its views, flavours and nightlife - but in the voices that fill its streets.

“Want a master class in Cape Culture for only R10?” asks Suga.“Catch a taxi in the CBD and just listen to the music and commentary.”

That same sense of rhythm, storytelling and connection pulses through The Suga Rush, her daily show on Heart FM. “Cape Town raised me, radio shaped me, and I’m here to give that energy right back.”

Whether she’s sharing a memory, spinning a track, or spotlighting the city’s creatives, Suga’s mic is a mirror for the soul of the Mother City.

In this warm, wisdom-filled catch-up she opens up about career highlights, her go-to spots for recharging and why the city’s creative energy is unlike anywhere else.

Time Out Cape Town:  What’s one unforgettable on-air moment that still gives you goosebumps?

Suga: Interviewing Rita Marley was huge for me—talk about music royalty. I’ve had the privilege of some incredible conversations over the years—Janet Jackson called in once (yes, the Janet), and one that still gives me chills: Charlize Theron right after her Oscar win.

Fun fact? I used to collect magazines as a teen and had one with her on the cover before she went abroad to become the star we know today.

TO: You’re a trained chef – what inspired the move from decks to the kitchen?

Suga: Food, like music, tells a story. I’ve always loved creating, and the kitchen just became another place for me to express myself.

TO: If you had to name a dish that captures your personality, what would it be (and what’s in it)?

Suga: Suga’s Slow Burn. Think Cape Malay spice meets firecracker flavour. Spicy lamb curry, cooked low and slow, with attitude. Layers, depth, heat.

What does family QT look and sound like for you?
My son and I in the kitchen, old-school jams playing, taste-testing everything and laughing like mad. Add a dance break, and that’s a typical night.

TO: What makes Cape Town’s creative scene stand out on a global stage?

Suga: It’s our soul. There’s a raw, fearless fusion in everything we do - fashion, food, sound... And The Suga Rush is all about showcasing that.

TO: Beach, city, or mountain?
Suga: All three. That’s the Cape Town flex.

Suga’s Mother City Sweetest Spots

Truth Coffee & Bakoven at Sunset: Go-to local spots to recharge

Truth Coffee for that industrial energy hit and the best flat white in the game,” says Suga, shouting out the steampunk-inspired café on Buitenkant Street that’s become a global coffee pilgrimage spot.

With its moody lighting, exposed pipes, and baristas who treat coffee like a craft, it’s her go-to for a caffeine boost and creative spark.

But when she needs a deeper reset? “Sunset at Bakoven. Quiet, cinematic, healing.” It also happens to be one of the best tidal pools in the city

Tucked just beyond Camps Bay’s bustle, Bakoven Beach offers a secluded slice of the Atlantic, framed by boulders and backlit by blazing skies - one of Cape Town’s most underrated golden hour escapes.

Brunch at Four & Twenty and a Rooftop set at Gorgeous Gorge

Her ideal Sunday would look a little something like this:

"Start with brunch at Four & Twenty in Chelsea Village—charming, cosy, and always on point.

"Cruise through a market, then catch a rooftop set somewhere vibey like Gorgeous George.

I always end the day in my kitchen with my son—cooking, laughing, dancing. That's joy."

Best-kept secret in Cape Town? Mariams Kitchen

"The iconic Masala Steak Sandwich from Mariams Kitchen. Don’t argue just go," adds Suga.

This family-run eatery is a vibrant slice of Cape Town’s fast-food culture and a go-to spot for Halaal-certified Cape Malay and Indian comfort dishes. It adds flair to the food scene of one of the world's top culinary destinations.

Where to find them: 31 Heerengracht St, Foreshore, Cape Town.

Kayaking, Paragliding or Ziplining? All three!

“We live in an outdoor playground,” says Suga, who’s all about embracing Cape Town’s wild side.

Her top adventure picks?

Kayaking with penguins in Simon’s Town, where paddling past boulders brings you up close with the city’s cutest tuxedoed locals.

For a thrill among the treetops, she heads to Elgin’s zipline canopy tours, soaring over fynbos-covered valleys and waterfalls.

And when she’s in the mood for an adrenaline rush with a view?

Paragliding off Signal Hill ticks the box—launching into the sky above the Atlantic Seaboard for a glide that’s nothing short of breathtaking.

The Athletic Club & Social for a night out

For a night out that blends style with substance, The Athletic Club & Social is Suga’s top pick.

“It’s grown-folk fun,” she says of the moody, multi-level space tucked just off Buitengracht Street.

With velvet booths, vintage finishes, and killer playlists that move from jazz to house, it’s the kind of place where the cocktails are sharp, the lighting is low, and the chances of bumping into someone cool are always high.

Whether you’re in the lounge, at the rooftop bar, or dancing in the basement, it’s a vibe from start to finish.

Where to find them: 35 Buitengracht Street, Cape Town.
