After a yearlong hiatus, the bright yellow Chicago Water Taxi is officially returning to the Chicago River this summer. The popular passenger boat service will resume rides May 29—the start of Memorial Day weekend—with new safety protocols in place.
You can hop on the water taxi seven days a week at Ogilvie/Union (West Loop), Michigan Avenue, Chicago Riverwalk and Chinatown (no word yet on when the taxi's Chicago Avenue and Goose Island routes will pick back up again). New safety procedures include run-of-the-mill requirements like masking while at the docks and on board the Water Taxi (even if you're standing outside), social distancing, credit card-only transactions and capacity limits.
Not a downtown commuter? Consider a sightseeing trip, because as far as river cruises go, this one is pretty cheap: Tickets are $6 for a one-way pass or $10 for an all-day pass; the service also offers tiered options for 10-ride passes as well as a monthly commuter pass. Food and drink are allowed aboard, and so are bikes—we're thinking that sounds like a perfect recipe for a Saturday afternoon ride to Chinatown's Ping Tom Memorial Park for a picnic.
