Without Commercial Interruption
September 2 - October 30
Increased reports of police violence against people of color have left us wondering what has changed since Gil Scott-Heron wrote, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised 45 years ago. In one way, we need only look at our 44th president to know we are a different nation, but even with an African American in the White House, we face tough questions of racial inequality in our country. These questions are central to the work in Without Commercial Interruption, which is titled from a line in Gil Scott-Heron’s iconic song. For artists, Donald Black Jr, Amber N. Ford and Martinez E-B, their interest in race did not arise from increased media coverage; it is intimately tied with their experience as black individuals growing up in Cleveland.

Donald Black Jr. is a Cleveland artist and teacher who works with video, installation, and photography. He is an alumnus of Cleveland School of the Arts and studied commercial photography at Ohio University. Black received third place in Nikon’s international photo competition. He is currently a founding member of Acerbic, which is an interdisciplinary artist collective, consulting and educational organization.

Amber N. Ford is a photographer and videographer based in Cleveland who received her BFA in Photography from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2016. Her work has a storytelling narrative and focuses on race, gender and identity. Ford has shown in various galleries in Cleveland, including FORUM Artspace and Micro Art Space.

Martinez E-B is a Chicago based artist who received a BFA in Painting from Cleveland Institute of Art and his MA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Columbia College Chicago. He is a multidisciplinary artist who has illustrated and authored books, had his works adapted into theater, shown in numerous exhibits, and has recently been featured in Sound of Applause Cleveland and in LEF(t) an artist publication by Critical Practice Inc. NYC.
