If you've ever travelled along the N3 between Durban and Pietermaritzburg (and if you’ve visited KZN, you undoubtedly have), you'll probably agree that any improvements to this stretch of road are long overdue.

The great news is that construction has officially begun on a major R6 billion upgrade between the Mariannhill Toll Plaza and Key Ridge, promising better traffic flow along one of the country’s busiest highways.

The project forms part of SANRAL's long-term plan to improve the country's most important freight and commuter corridor, connecting Durban's Port with the rest of South Africa.

Expect delays for a while

And while it's most welcome, motorists are asked to be patient as construction gets underway. For anyone who regularly travels between Durban, Hillcrest and Pietermaritzburg, it may mean a few frustrating commutes in the short term, but the long-term payoff could be well worth it.

Construction is expected to take around five years, with traffic disruptions already anticipated as work gets underway on the 11.1km section of the N3.

According to SANRAL KwaZulu-Natal Project Manager, Nondumiso Mabaso: "Motorists are advised that the impact of the construction on traffic will be significant. While every effort will be made to maintain safe and efficient traffic flow, road users should anticipate delays and plan their journeys accordingly.”

What you can look forward to

Once complete, the project will include:

  • Wider carriageways
  • Upgraded road surfaces
  • Two new viaduct bridges
  • Improved drainage systems
  • Better lighting
  • New road markings
  • Strengthened safety barriers

Beyond making life easier for motorists, the project is also expected to boost local economic development through job creation, skills training and opportunities for businesses along the corridor.

What you need to know

  • Project value: R6 billion
  • Construction period: 60 months (approximately five years)
  • Road being upgraded: An 11.1km section of the N3 between Mariannhill Toll Plaza and Key Ridge
  • Temporary speed limits: Heavy vehicles: 40km/h | Light vehicles: 60km/h
  • Alternative routes if incidents occur: M13 | N3 service roads (where available) | Local municipal roads as directed by traffic officials

While five years may seem a long time, the final result will be safer roads and smoother journeys as you explore KZN!
