After a prestigious artist residency in Germany, KwaNgcolosi-born visual artist Ande Magoso returns to Durban with Mbulumakheqe, an exhibition combining contemporary paintings with traditional Zulu folktales.

Art has a way of travelling – but sometimes the most interesting journeys bring you right back home.
KZN artist Ande Magoso is returning to Durban after a prestigious fellowship residency in Germany – and you can catch his new exhibition at the KZNSA Gallery.
Running from 2 to 22 November 2026, Mbulumakheqe brings together Magoso’s paintings and recorded inganekwane (traditional folktales) shared by oral storyteller Mbali Malimela.
The result is a collaboration that connects contemporary visual art with the age-old tradition of passing stories from one generation to the next.

Magoso recently completed a fellowship residency at Stiftung Künstlerdorf Schöppingen in Germany, one of Europe’s respected artist residency programmes.
Originally from KwaNgcolosi in KwaZulu-Natal, Magoso’s return to Durban brings his international experience into conversation with the heritage and communities that inform his artistic practice.
At the heart of Mbulumakheqe is the meeting of two forms of storytelling: Magoso’s visual interpretations and Malimela’s recorded inganekwane.
Oral storytelling has long played an important role in preserving cultural knowledge, history and identity. By bringing these recorded tales into the gallery alongside his paintings, Magoso invites visitors to consider how stories shape our understanding of who we are, where we come from and what we pass on.
This unique exhibition gives you a chance to experience the worlds of oral and visual tradition coming together under one roof.
