Back before the radio, the aeroplane, the teddy bear, or even teabags… there was Henry. At an impressive 124 years, this ancient reptile is considered the oldest known Nile crocodile in captivity, and he’s ready to celebrate his 125th birthday with you!

Highlight 16 December on your calendar because Crocworld Conservation Centre in Scottburgh on the KZN South Coast is throwing a birthday bash for this beloved croc. Henry has called Crocworld home for the past 40 years after being transferred from the Okavango Delta. While Nile crocodiles typically live up to 70 years in the wild, Henry is breaking the records, which is well worth a party!

“This public holiday is a highlight on the Crocworld calendar as we get to celebrate our most famous resident,” says Centre Manager Susan Badat. “This year, we’re going bigger than ever, and we’re encouraging families to celebrate with us in style!”

A Festive Day Out for the Whole Family

The celebrations kick off on Reconciliation Day (16 December) with a fun-packed programme. Expect a vibrant Parkrun Colour Run with both 2km and 5km races (and prizes for the Best Dressed, so get creative!). There’ll be inflatable fun, face painting, local curio vendors, and free cupcakes handed out in Henry’s honour.

If you’re visiting anytime in December, you can also catch Crocworld’s famous crocodile feedings at 11am and 3pm daily, giving you an up-close look at these prehistoric giants in action. Look out for Henry, of course, but there’s also his oldest friend, Colgate, who’s now in his 90s!

From 16 to 24 December, keep an eye out for the Secret Santa Pop-Up at Crocworld, when the jolly fellow in red appears with giveaways for lucky guests.
